I was attacked by a swordsman in black who stole my jade pendant but did not kill me. Looking for clues at Jiang Wulang old house, I find a letter written to him by someone called Wei, telling that the 梦傀之灾 has resurfaced and that his disciple Tian Ying is trapped in the Southern Tang.
I promised Hongxian to buy Uncle Guang’s new storybook at the General’s Shrine. On the way there, we meet Feng Jisheng, a disciple of Tian Ying from the Wenjin Pavilion, who shares the technique 停渊止水 with me and tells us that 死人刀 has arrived in the region.

First 万事知 completed! I met Rongrong 蓉蓉 and her master Shi Qianqian 施芊芊, helped Rongrong obtain the three tokens. The observation tower and the tree were the easiest, but I remember that it took me some time to find the bird the first time I played. I remembered exactly where it was though, so it was fast this tim. Rongrong couldn’t fool her master in the end, so I guess neither of us are going to red the 《大侠秘籍》!

The founder of the Late Jin, Shi Jingtang (石敬瑭 Shí Jìngtáng) is the one who gave the Sixteen Prefectures to the Khitan emperor (耶律德光 Yēlǜ Déguāng), leaving the Central Plains completely exposed. Shi Jingtang’s successor Shi Chonggui (石重贵 Shí Chóngguì) tried to assert the Late Jin’s independence from the Liao/Khitan and stopped paying hommage to their Emperor. This led to a vengeful and massive Southern invasion. In 944, the Khitan forces invaded Beizhou (Qinghe), captured the region and heavily plundered it, slaughtering the population and confiscating resources. They will eventually invade Kaifeng in 947.

Their father was a soldier of the 燕北盟Organisation燕北盟yàn běi méngNorthern Yan Alliance河山如故The Northern Yan Alliance once defending Qinghe against the Khitan Southern invasions, holding out against the Khitan cavalry for month in a fortified city (only ruins remain now, the 北盟遗址). Even though the fortress fell, the warriors of the Alliance managed to chase the Khitan army out of the Central Plains. They both lament that the names of the fallen heroes are unknown, and I gave them the blood oath covenant I found in the secret chamber. The name of their father is there, but not the one they call Uncle Cui 崔叔, and that’s where the mystery of the missing name resurfaces.

His name is Cui Xiaojin. He is their father’s sworn brother and they are closer than family. He joined the Alliance together with their father but his whereabouts are unknown and he has been accused of desertion. If his name was on the list, this would have cleared him of these accusations, but his name is missing. Deserter or not, the Lie brothers want to find him and ask me to talk to him if I find him during my travels.

I infiltrate the stronghold, kill all the Long Hu Zhai bandits and free the descendant of the Alliance who was being tortured. His name is 烈不灭烈不灭liè bù mièLie Bumie河山如故Descendant of the Northern Yan Alliance who has been kidnapped by the Long Hu Zhai and tortured. He didn’t reveal anything about the treasure and keeps repeating the oath., so it’s now obvious he is related to Lie Bujin, who must have sent me there to save his brother (mental note to try and find this man again). Lie Bumie can hardly speak and only recites the Northern Yan Oath. I lit the beacons and open the secret underground passage filled with the corpses of Khitan invaders and Alliance soldiers and two statues of generals, one beheaded. Selecting the characters of the Oath on the wall opens a new passage that leads to the treasure which is a document with the name of the 119 soldiers who swore the Oath. The document states that 120 soldiers gathered but only 119 swore the Oath…

稚子江湖·一 — A Child's Jianghu: Part I
I met Xiao Pingan 小平安 and displayed my mastery of 无名剑法. This child sounds like a scam haha. Next skill to display was 积矩九剑, which I already learnt, but he said we’ll continue the next time we meet.
Some of what he said was much too difficult for me, but I guess it’s fine not to understand everything, studying this in detail would take too much time, like I think there are several quotations, for example, this comes from the Daodejing, but he mixes up the last part, which is quite funny, but completely out of reach for me, unless I look things up.
小平安：无名剑法……“名可名，非恒名。无名，万物之始也……”你这剑法，取名倒是弄巧若拙！
弄巧若拙 does not exist, Xiao Ping’an mixes up (I mean, purposely set a trap to test our knowledge of classical idioms) two different expressions:

This is actually quite funny, it’s so sad to think that I’m probably constantly missing puns and humour because my Chinese is not good enough… Anyway, the main point is that he has 绝学 juéxué, a peerless martial technique passed down through generations that would end with him because he cannot practice martial arts (at least, that’s what he says…)
I never completed this encounter in my first play, so I’m looking forward to see what’s next, and whether there really is a secret martial art to be learnt (I kind of doubt it though!).

Second encounter with Xiao Ping’an
Met Xiao Ping’an again to demonstrate the 积矩九剑 skill. He called me a 孺子可教 (promising student) haha. This boy is quite funny, his story is becoming more and more fishy, and he said is father is a 武林漏斗 Martial arts funnel…? Did he mean 武林泰斗 (wǔlín tàidǒu) a revered grandmaster of the martial arts world?
I didn’t know the word 漏斗, I had to look it up and it didn’t make any sense. Martial arts funnel really gave me a good laugh.

自入清河最东处，可见残垣遗址，连亘数里。盖此处为前朝，燕北盟故地。昔年契丹侵中国，燕北盟退守清河，据此坚城曾力抗契丹铁骑数月，憾终是城破人亡，与契丹两败俱伤，后游战清河，终逼契丹贼子，退离中原。
旧传，燕北盟将士曾发燕云誓：山河寸土，誓死不易。今视荒城野地，何其慨然。

We learn about the Yan Northern Alliance (燕北盟). When the Khitans invaded the Central Plains (中国), the Yan Northern Alliance retreated to defend Qinghe, resisting the Khitans invasion for several months using this stronghold. The fortress fell its defenders died, but the remaining soldiers ultimately forced the Khitan invaders to withdraw from the Central Plains through guerrilla warfare.
I’ll have to go to this stronghold, I think it must be the one taken over by the 龙虎寨 who chased Jin Chunniang and her son.

The founder of the Late Jin, Shi Jingtang (石敬瑭 Shí Jìngtáng) is the one who gave the Sixteen Prefectures to the Khitan emperor (耶律德光 Yēlǜ Déguāng), leaving the Central Plains completely exposed. Shi Jingtang’s successor Shi Chonggui (石重贵 Shí Chóngguì) tried to assert the Late Jin’s independence from the Liao/Khitan and stopped paying hommage to their Emperor. This led to a vengeful and massive Southern invasion. In 944, the Khitan forces invaded Beizhou (Qinghe), captured the region and heavily plundered it, slaughtering the population and confiscating resources. They will eventually invade Kaifeng in 947.

I never properly read this when I first played… So this spear is really special then, I received it from Jiang Wulang, he made adjustments to it for me, and it was also the witness and symbol of our relationship and complicity. It would be cool to continue using this spear no matter what!

This description is very hard. 禹 Yǔ, Yu the Great is a legendary ancient ruler who controlled great floods for the first time(?). 李淳风 Lǐ Chúnfēng is a prominent early Tang dynasty mathematician. 周髀算经 Zhōubì Suànjīng is one of China’s earliest mathematical treaties.
The idea of accumulated carpenter’s square probably has something to do with calculating area and geometry? In any case, in our sword mastery context, it represents absolute precision, discipline and structure and values impeccable technique. The moves do look very neat and precise!

This organisation is based on loyalty and righteousness, and they serve the patriotic cause of winning back the Sixteen Prefectures. The fallen soldier we find in the stronghold laments 燕云未归，十载空付，何能不悲？
It’s not the first time I’m seeing a reference to the Zhong Du Bridge battle… I just saw that it’s a real event, and Wang Qing is also a real person… I’ll have to dig into it!
As for the part about “sacrifice their faces”, I’m not sure what it means exactly. (I have vague recollection from my first time playing, but I really didn’t understand much, so it’s like I’m playing for the first time.) So much mystery to uncover still!

烈言读的书不多，他曾只是个清河的浪荡儿，后来，在那个王将军的影响下，他才第一次翻开兵法书。
书上说，用兵之法，十则围之，五则攻之，倍则战之。
却没有说，若是敌方十倍、五倍于自己，该如何胜。
这筹谋已久的最后一战，未免来得太过出乎意料。
“将军！”

将士们都看向他，眼里是同样的茫然和动摇。
“诸位，这门一开，我们便都只有死路。”烈言对着将士们说。
“可若门不开，清河的老少，便只有一条死路。”
眼下，只有最后一条路可走。唯有将敌军尽数引入地下长城，点爆炸药，将敌人和我军，一起埋葬在这燕北盟地下。但这条路也凶险万分，成功的可能微乎其微。
此为利害，悉数告知，所以将士们，你们选什么？
“将军！我愿追随将军，开门，应战！”
“山河寸血，誓死不易！开门，应战！”
“战！”“战！”“战！”
呐喊的声音一浪高过一浪，竟让从未落过泪的烈言生平第一次眼眶湿润。他握紧长枪，将每一张呐喊的脸记在心里，这是最后一眼。
他抹了把脸，转身，将枪尖指向敌军的方向。
“开门——！迎敌！”
他烈言，就活到这。

Wow this passage is so great! Referring to this battle, the 地理·北盟遗址 said it led to 两败俱伤, but I didn’t know it was to this extend. They did not just fight with their lives, they decided to sacrifice themselves as the only way of winning, even if the chances were small. And every one solider followed Lie Yan’s decision.

This passage was surprisingly easy to read. I now expect everything to be written in Classical Chinese, so I was surprised I could read this. I also think this text unlocks after we finish the quest, so I had no idea what really happened when I was exploring the underground ruins.

I befriended Jin Chunniang and her child, I never read her backstory before, but it’s very interesting. She’s a refugee from the South of Yan (燕), so just South of the Yanyun sixteen prefectures. In 936, Shi Jingtang gave those prefectures to the Khitan Liao, so the open plains south of them where Chunniang lived with her family had no mountain passes to shield them. Liao armies invaded repeatedly, plundering villages, which is probably how her husband died. She fled South to Qinghe with her son, found refuge in the ruins of the Northern Alliance (北盟遗址) but was driven out by bandits from 龙虎寨. (I think it’s a fort or something in game, I’ll have to go there and take revenge).
