Could have been better, could have been worse… got a Keqing along the way… It’s actually the first time I get her on banner!
I’m pleasantly surprised by Sandrone’s traversal ability! It didn’t look that great on the SP for some reason, but I like it a lot. Still have no idea how to play her, but I think I’m going to enjoy her playstyle! I don’t have Neuvillette, so to me it feels very unique and new!

I finished adding new words from 礁与浪的相逢 and I’m starting the 幻友绮旅 now!
I’ll try to work on one small segment per day, so that I can finish it by the time the Fontinalia Festival gets added to the DB. Oh and the next WQ will be voiced!!! That is insane!
If they decide to make all WQ of Snezhnaya voiced, I would be so happy, it would make playing the game in Chinese so much easier too, because right now WQ are the hardest content.
Just read a few pages today. I actually wanted to read a full chapter but I had no time and no energy anyway. I did read a few pages to stay in the story (because I haven’t touched the book during the weekend).
来一盘吗?
There’s something interesting I noticed while I was listening to my audiobook last night: it looks like weixin dushu automatically sets a 60-minute timer if the phone is on sleep. I don’t know if it’s really the case, but the timer was on even though I didn’t activate it myself.
To be honest, I’ve never really liked Alice, from the first moments she appeared in game to the Nod-Krai arc where she was more present… but now I’m starting to warming up to her because of Prune’s story.
June 2026
Now I understand why this book has been ranked first on このミステリーがすごい!, ミステリが読みたい! and 週刊文春ミステリーベスト10,
The book was really great, and it’s right up my alley as police procedurals are my favourite sub-genre. I also liked that the story is not focused on the main police detective but on the case. The plot is really good, the case is very complex, elements that seemed unrelated at first turn out to be more important that they looked, the end is excellent, but most of all, it’s heavily focused on characters, their motives and how they’re dealing with the situations they’ve fallen into.
Finished! Last two chapters were very short.
I couldn’t sleep at all last night, so I listened to 失踪假日. I really love this story.
Also listening lying in bed was much easier than listening on-the-go or while doing other things. I felt like I understood everything!
I started The Resurrected, it looks very good, though the first episode was really depressing…
Ended up reading another chapter, the plot is incredibly good!
There are two chapters left, I’m keeping them for tomorrow.
Finished chapter 5. I say it after every chapter, but wow this book is so so good!! This chapter was the best so far!

I saw 冲刷 twice in a similar context, things, past being washed away by the rain. It’s the best way to remember a word, and to understand how it’s used.
I finished 玛利亚的手指, which I loved, and started 失踪假日 which is also the longest.
I found it hard at first and couldn’t follow well, so I read the first pages in the book. The text is very easy (as everything I read by Otsuichi so far), but my listening is bad compared to my reading.
It’s interesting that just reading the beginning is enough to get me started. I know the context, setting, character names… and then I can just listen and understand pretty well.
Finished chapter 4, wow this book is really great. Best police procedural I’ve read in a while. This chapter in particular had decisive elements, it’s very suspenseful!
My initial plan was to study character’s mails on their birthday, but I have a lot of catch up to do… Mails have piled up so quickly these past weeks.
His kit is pretty easy, there’s only three key words: 欢悦 (the thing he accumulates to unleash his special skills), 争胜 (the thing teammates accumulate for him to increase damage of special skill and burst) and 乘兴 (the thing that increases his skill level).

Finally did Fischl Witch’s Homework! The story was so great, I think it was the best one from the ones I did. And it would have probably helped to do it before my IT run rather than after but oh well…
I’ve completed all the tasks I wanted to do during the patch, which included a lot of content from previous patches. I’m still very late in Nod-Krai exploration and anecdotes.,,
I will pull for Sandrone. and it would be tempting to go for constellations of Mizuki on the special banner, but I more or less like all the Snezhnaya characters so…
Finished the event! It was really cool talking to Bennett, and I had completely forgotten how fun the region was with the asha exploration mechanic!
The event was okay, I like coop events anyway, but it was also not the most memorable one imo.
With this done, I cleared all the events of the patch, I’m ready for moon landing!
Finally finished an IT run! It was NOT easy… I managed to keep Zibai for the last boss, but even her with Aino and Illuga cleared on the last second.
I probably won’t try another run, I don’t see my characters able to make a full flowers run.
Also, strongest single strike was Linnea with other 500k!! How!?!
I did everything I wanted to do in the patch! The achievement card is complete, I can peacefully wait for Enigma to release.
I didn’t like this version of UTTU, why did they make restrictions on the characters we can use? I really don’t see the point of the event, if we just use trial characters. It felt bad not being able to use my P5 Ezio, or my favourite character Charon.
And the restrictions were always the same, there was not a single stage that allowed us to play dynamo? Unless I missed something?
Limbo is done too, and I played Critter Crash until I got the skin. I’m missing some rewards, so I might do a couple of other runs if I have time.
Finished chapter 3, halfway through already!
I like that each chapter is one day, and we really follow the characters through the whole day. Given that I’m reading one chapter per day, it feels like the story is unfolding in real time.

Finally did Prune’s last ascension, but I’m not maxing her level (still 80) nor her talents. I won’t really play her anyway, I built her for IT and because I like her, but I have no idea if she would be good in any of my teams.
Both Reverse 1999 and Genshin new patches come out next week! And I still have quite a lot of things to do in each game especially R1999… like really a lot!
This weekend is going to be a gaming weekend for sure
I finished the first chapter/story. No real surprise in the end, the solution was pretty obvious and I’m not sure I found it that convincing, but it was entertaining and very easy to read. Overall, it was a enjoyable read!
I won’t necessarily love books that get good rankings or win awards, but 1/3 into the book, I must say that 失われた貌 is really good. I feel motivated to continue reading the prize winners and books that ranked in the top 10 of major mystery rankings.
Snezhnaya characters look great
I especially love 达妮卡 and 阿罗夏
I’m so happy that Snezhnaya will release during August too, Summer always feels so long, so it will be something to be looking for.
I finished the second chapter… this book is really great!! An excellent police procedural so far, the case seems really complex, I love it!
Finished chapter 2! Love it as much as 403小組,警隊出動!so far.

I looked at Kanae Minato’s books ranking in the major mystery novels rankings, and there must be a mistake… According to Wikipedia, only 告白 ranked in the top 10:
- 1st in 週刊文春ミステリーベスト10
- 3rd in ミステリが読みたい!
- 4th in このミステリーがすごい!
And that’s it… three other books made it to the rankings, but not in the first 10 places.
I find this very strange, how come that books like 白ゆき姫殺人事件 or 豆の上で眠る never got into any ranking at all? These are my favourites, but she wrote so many novels I haven’t read which I’m sure are great.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to read much, but I absolutely love the beginning! I had no idea that this book featured one of the main characters of 403小組,警隊出動!, that’s really a nice surprise.
Reading in Traditional Chinese after reading in Simplified for a long time always gives me a headache. Took me one hour to go through 20 ebook pages. I know it’s going to get easier with time, I just need to get used to it again.
Oh, 林木森 is also from 403小組,警隊出動!, hard to forget that name!

After just 2 or 3 pages, I was thinking that this Wang Shuochan felt very similar to the partner of the protagonist in 403小組,警隊出動!And the more I was thinking that, the more the name actually sounded similar, so I checked: it’s the same character!
That’s pretty cool!! I’m super happy, really loved this character!
So given that I’m following a list that gave chronological order for Yen Yu’s books, I guess that this novel takes place after the events in 403小組,警隊出動!
Every time I read a book in Chinese after reading in Japanese I feel so let down when I see a character name. Wdym you’re not giving me the pronunciation??
I started the first story (I’m assuming each chapter is going to be a different case), it’s very good and reads very easily!

I’m not doing my Korean food notebook anymore, but there’s a mention of 갈비탕 and 냉면 right on the second page. Having to go through a whole dialogue during which characters are eating galbitang and naengmyeon is pure torture!!
I read the first chapter! Loved it, looks like a good police procedural!
They don’t work in the same departments, but here are the police ranks of the main characters:
- Takamiya is 警視 Police Superintendent, two ranks above Hino.
- Habaro is 警部, Police Inspector, one rank above Hino, even though they’re the same age.
- Hino Yukihiko is 警部補 Assistant Police Inspector.
- Irie Ayano is 巡査部長, Police Sergeant, one rank below Hino who is her direct superior.
The 生活安全課 is a branch in Japanese police specialised in prevention and public order. They handle juvenile delinquency, DV, cybercrime, economic crimes, illegal gambling, prostitution, drugs, etc.
Given that I have three new books at the same time (a rare occasion!), I’ve decided to start them all today.
When I decided to start this reading challenge of reading one book per language, I was thinking of it as a friendly competition between my target languages: see which language I will read the most each month.
If I start the three current books at the same time, we’ll see which one I’ll finish the sooner! I know it depends on a lot of parameters, but to me it’s just a fun way to make things more interesting.
I did Lohen’s Witch’s Homework (his story was pretty good!) and tried the new IT, but it’s really tough. I’m halfway through, but I’ll have to give up on the full flower clear. I don’t even know if I’ll be able to complete the run even. If not I’ll have to redo a run without trying to go to the flowers, which will allow me to keep better characters for the last combats. And borrowing my husband’s Kokomi was a mistake…
MVP so far is Durin for sure.
I finished the last chapter of Nicole’s quest. It was a nice event overall, it’s cool to have new formats for events/stories.
All three books are bought and added to the DB. It’s so exciting! Can’t wait to start them!
Now that I finished 暗黑者2 I’m going back to reading Yen Yu’s police novels. There are three that have a similar title:
- 警察執勤中:正義的代價
- 警察迷途中:誰是兇手
- 警察執勤中:宣戰角頭
I don’t know if they are a trilogy or a series, or are completely independent, but I’m going to read the three anyway. Starting with 警察執勤中:正義的代價!
I found the second volume of 暗黑者 overall entertaining and suspenseful, but it felt diluted at times, and even though it does have great plot, memorable scenes and good twists, it doesn’t have the impact of the first one in my opinion.
The plot is really great, there are several cases, several story lines, but everything ends up being connected. Everything makes sense, the plot is complex but easy to follow, there’s a lot of suspense too.
However, I found that some chapters, especially in the second half, tended to be repetitive (there’s one in particular that feels oddly placed), and there are a couple of things that I dislike in the author’s writing style. First, there is a tendency to conceal the identity of well known character when we open a new scene. They are even described as if it was the first time we saw them. This didn’t bring anything imo and was just annoying to read. Then there are the small commentaries: oftentimes, we get a dialogue, then the author would add something like “indeed, …” followed by generalisations, clichés or useless explanations for things obvious and simple.
I also find the characters are generally just all too strong and too perfect. Luo Fei’s observation skills could be a nice addition if they were not so exaggerated. Overall, male characters in the novel are all heroes, and female characters tend to be the weakest link. It’s pretty obvious (the person who lets Chengyu in the archive room is a woman, the nurse who lets the journalist visit Wu Yinwu is a woman, Mu Jianyun is the reason why Luo Fei had to let Eumenides kill Deng Hua in vol.1, and she let Chengyu plant a microphone in her phone, even Zheng Jiao ends up handing the recording to Chengyu without questioning what it could be).
On the contrary some characters like Han Hao and Ding Ke are overpraised. Ding Ke in particular was really annoying: the author kept praising him in such a superficial way it felt very strange. It was all tell not show, and the only things that the reader actually know are despicable: covering for student and son, fleeing and hiding from the consequences of his choices… Despite all these, the novel kept trying to make us admire and revere Ding Ke.
When I finish volume 1 I would have said without hesitation that I would read the whole trilogy, but now I don’t really feel like starting volume 3. I’m pretty sure the story will be great, and I will like it, but I’m afraid the things I didn’t like in the second one will be in the third one as well.
Summary (contains spoilers)
Chengyu seems to have abandoned Eumenides and go to see Zheng Jiao. She gives him the full recording of the 1/30 case without knowing what it is. Yuan Zhibang had given it to her, foreseeing that Chengyu might try to settle with her.
The full recording shows that it’s actually Chen Tianqiao who triggered Wen Hongbing’s reaction, not Chengyu.
Chengyu kills Chen Tianqiao.
He is arrested by Luo Fei who had discovered the truth a while ago: Du Mingqiang was Wen Chengyu. He killed the real journalist and took his place to get close to the police. He planted a microphone in Mu Jianyun’s phone when he changed the sim card during their first interview. The whole Chang Kai thing was a way to identify Liu Song’s men who were watching him.
Luo Fei tells him that he managed to take a fingerprint proving he killed Chen Tianqiao, but hearing this, Chengyu severs the tip of his finger with his teeth(?!?)
Chengyu says that Yuan Zhibang had provided him with several identities, Du Mingqiang being only one of them.
He is arrested for minor crimes, but not for murder.
Done! The last chapter was so good too!!
I was about to say that it’s the longest book I read in Chinese, but then I remembered 網內人 which is about the same length (and there’s the Gu Long novel too, but this one read so easily it didn’t really feel that long).
The book was good overall, but I felt like it had a tendency to drag on in the second half. Stil very entertaining!
It’s crazy that I actually need to buy three new books today, one in each language . Funny that I finished all three more or less at the same time.
NamuWiki says that the 한국추리문학상 is the only Mystery Award in Korea, and looking at the list of winners, there are a lot of years in the 2000s where the award hasn’t been given. Last year without winner is 2023.
I find this strange because I do think that mystery fiction has a lively and active scene in Korea, I constantly see new publications of thrillers and mystery novels, there’s more coming out that I can keep up with. I find it strange that there aren’t other prizes, but seeing that the only one existing has so many missed years is quite depressing.
I’ll probably have to find the list of nominees somewhere just to have more books to choose from.
I chose my next Korean book: 교통사고 전문 삼비 탐정 by 윤자영. I’m going to go through the list of the winners of 한국추리문학상, at least the most recent ones, and in no particular order
I already read two of the winners, one I loved and the other not so much.
I chose 교통사고 전문 삼비 탐정 because I already read one novel and at least a couple of short stories by 윤자영 and loved them all.
第二十七章 亡者之礼 (contains spoilers)
Luo Fei explains the circumstances surrounding Wen Hongbing’s death to Du Mingqiang, gives him the recording and asks him to publish an article, hoping it would make Chengyu give up on the Eumenides’ role.
Before his death, Yuan Zhibang had ordered for a cake to be delivered to Luo Fei on his birthday. It also contains the identity and address of Chen Tianqiao. The police arrests him.
Du Mingqiang survives the month of his execution, Chen Tianqiao is set free, Luo Fei concludes that Chengyu has given up on Eumenides and that it will be impossible to find him. The team is dismantled.
Finished chapter 27, just one more to go!
失われた貌 by 櫻田智也 ranked first on first on three of the biggest Japanese rankings for mystery novels last year! So I guess it’s good?
It’s decided, this will be my next read!
I haven’t read a lot in Japanese lately (since I started reading in Chinese), and I’ve lost touched with newer publications. Time to go back to it!
I don’t know what my next Japanese book will be. Part of me is tempted to just continue reading Otsuichi, but given that I brought the lists of rankings and prize winners to the website, I also want to start reading those…
I loved both 夏と花火と私の死体 and the short story 優子 that is featured in the book. 夏と花火と私の死体 was really good, especially for a debut novel and given that Otsuichi was so young when it was published. The way it’s narrated was very interested, very detached given the circumstances, very factual and descriptive too, which contrasted with the tension inherent to the plot.
And 優子 was a really good mystery, there’s both a good twist at the end, and a constant sadness and feeling of loneliness in the story.
I finished 優子, it was really good! It has a very good, surprising end, but it’s quite sad too.
Today I’m going to try and finish 暗黑者2, I wonder if it’s going to end on some kind of resolution or leave things open. I don’t want to start volume 3 right away, I would rather read other things, I’m not even sure I’ll read volume 3 this year. That’s the reason why I wrote down summaries for every chapter, it won’t be a problem to go back into the story when I decide to.
I will also continue reading 優子, the short story in 夏と花火と私の死体, which I might also finish given that the book is rather short. And I still haven’t bought nor started a Korean book, so it would be the first time since I started this challenge where I have no book at all for a day, so I probably should buy the Korean book before finishing the other two (I don’t want the currently reading section to stay empty).
There are actually two stories in 夏と花火と私の死体, first the short novel of the same name, that I finished, and a short story: 優子 that I just began,
I loved 夏と花火と私の死体 very much, there was such an emotional detachment in the narration, it was a really interesting reading experience. The story was great, not my favourite one, but impressive for a book published at what, 18 or something like that?
I was missing some moths for Lohen’s last ascension so I went to the Temple of Space to farm those and do some puzzles, which allowed me to finally reach those 80% on both regions combined!
There are still some chests to find (I actually just so that trial over there when taking this picture), but I can take my time now. I don’t know if I like the puzzles all that much in the Temple of Space, and overall, I’m not a super big fan of this region as a place to explore. I did love the WQ, but it’s not really a place where I want to spend time.
I finished Lohen’s SQ, so great!! I loved it, makes me feel like I know the character better, it was not too long which I really appreciate, and there was good pacing and action. No cutscene though, exactly like the event… really hoping this is not a trend.
Finished chapter 26! This one was long for nothing, the author is taking so much precautions to explain something obvious and simple as if it was a super complex and new idea that most readers wouldn’t understand.
I also think there are a lot of problems surrounding Ding Ke, that made the whole thing really painful to read. The fact that he covered for Yuan Zhibang twice, and then for his son, is described like something perfectly okay. The character of Ding Ke is unbearable. It would be interesting to make him ambiguous or despicable in some ways, but the problem is that the novel never stops to praise him, this is so annoying.
This chapter could have been so much shorter, I’m feeling more and more that the novel is dragging on.
第二十六章 论菊 (contains spoilers)
After a long analogy with flowers to convey something relatively simple, we learn that Ding Ke quit the police partly because he didn’t believe that punishing criminals made sense, and preferred working at the root of the problem by understanding what pushed them to crime in the first place and create conditions where this would not happen (though we don’t know what he is doing concretely.)
Ding Ke also said that he first chose Luo Fei as his “successor” but changed his mind because he created Eumenides.
He finally reveals the truth behind the 1/30 case: just as the situation was under control, Chengyu asked his father if he brought his birthday cake, which re-triggered Wen Hongbing's despair (not having enough money to buy his son a birthday cake), the situation escalated again and Yuan Zhibang had to shoot him. The question of why Zhibang, a trainee police officer, was on the front line, alone and armed, is not addressed.
Ding Ke gives the audio recording of the scene to Luo Fei in private, he thinks someone from the team might work with Eumenides, because he doesn’t think Chengyu could have work out the truth behind the 1/12 case without access to the files. He hints that he didn’t tell the whole truth about Wen Hongbing’s death.
第二十五章 子亡父出 (contains spoilers)
Eumenides has sent the death notice to Ding Zhen and told him he knows about the 1/12 case, and that it’s just a matter of time before the police arrives at the same conclusion. Ding Zhen commits suicide. We learn that he was attracted to Wu Qiong but the trauma of seeing his mother with another man as a child has made him has led to sexual dysfunction. Feng Chunling had made fun of him, which is why Ding Zhen killed her.
Ding Ke shows up at his son’s funeral, and invites Luo Fei and the team to meet him when everything is settled.

Finally finished Lohen SQ which gave me the last materials to build him! Artifacts are very bad. Durin has the best pieces which were not even that good to begin with… but it’s fine, I don’t really care about his damage.
Given that Xiao is using Ineffa’s weapon, I gave Lohen PJWS which I believe is really good on him.
And artifact passive and cryo resonance give 35% CR, but maybe I should adjust his build if I decide to not play him with granny.
Sometimes I just don’t understand what the author is thinking… Ding Ke covered for his student, then covered for his son, and both time we’re talking murder, yet characters are still sighing in admiration before him and even say 没有逃避过任何责任? Do the author expect the reader to feel the same way? It’s so weird…
It is also all tell not show, I think everything revolving around this character is by far the weakest part of the novel.
Chapter 25 done! I’m nearing the end of the book now so the tension should be at the highest, but I’m starting losing interest in the story. I found some chapters a bit too long for nothing, there are some repetitions, and the tension feels diluted to me. Or maybe it’s just that I’ve been reading this book for so long now, I’m looking forward to reading something else.
The first volume being shorter was very impactful, there was no time to catch your breath, it was a real page-turner. With this one, I find the author tends to spend too much time explaining or describing things that are already obvious for the reader, making the book a bit longer than it needed maybe.
I found 홈캠 okay overall, but it tried to be two films at the same time, and I personally find that it could have been such a great film if it had stuck to one story line only. First of all, I find the two lines to really belong to two separate films. Together they make the plot unnecessarily complicated, and I do think that one was enough. And one of these story line was your classic possession/demon stuff with your mandatory 굿 scene, which was not bad to be fair, but we’ve seen this so many times already, not bad per se, but also nothing special or particularly inventive or new. The other story line though was really excellent: the fact that the mother thought her daughter was still a child, while the home cam started revealing the truth was a great idea. It was very well done, a lot of clues were planted all along, and all the strange little things made sense in the end. I personally think that if the film had only revolved around it, it would have been much much better. The tension that arise from the presence of other characters was enough to make the film a good psychological horror movie. Everything could have been resolved with no supernatural at all.
I think I finished a part, even though it’s not really defined as such. Still absolutely loving this novel!
I’m happy with my progress on the DB today, it’s definitely a slow and long process, but it’s going to be so worth it!
I went over a lot of prizes and rankings for mystery novels, the number of awards and rankings in Japan is insane… I only have one prize for Korean fiction, one for Taiwanese fiction, and one for the Chinese written works cross regions. Nothing for Mainland China specifically, I’ll have to dig more into what exists.
So so so many books to read!!!!
第二十四章 疑凶绘像 (contains spoilers)
Eumenides has sent a death notice to the culprit of the 1/12 case, the date is this day. The team brainstorms ideas to find the murderer, and just like that they do what the Huang Jieyuan and the whole police force didn’t manage to do at the time, they find him: It’s Ding Zhen, Ding Ke’s son.
I listened to the main story today (only did a couple of chapters), just listening, not looking at the text. It was okayish, I can’t say I’m following like super well, but enough to find it interesting and know what is happening.
Read another chapter today! This one was a nice change of pace, only based on discussion and deductions. But to be honest, I find all the psychological profiling not convincing at all, it’s full of generalisations and cheap shortcuts. Still enjoyed reading the whole chapter!
When talking about choosing a name for her imaginary friend, the text say that 德斯卡戴 felt full of philosophical reasoning. I didn’t understand why, so I looked at the name of her imaginary friend in English: it’s Descartes! But René Descartes in Chinese is笛卡儿, so the two sound very different.
Another example of sexist role attribution at the beginning of chapter 24: Mu Jianyun, a psychologist working with the police, unable to look at crime scene pictures because she’s a woman:
慕剑云却又和曾日华截然相反,只要遇到有照片的章节,她都于脆闭上眼睛直接跳过,即便如此,随着阅读的深入,她的呼吸还是变得越来越急促,像是有些承受不住的样子。
It’s so annoying…
第二十三章 虎狼之约 (contains spoilers)
Meng Fangliang‘s wife received a recording proving that A Hua is responsible for the death of Lin Henggan and her husband. Before the police can arrives, two men from A Hua disguised as policemen take the recording, but got attacked by Eumenides soon after who disappears with it.
We learn the steps that led A Hua to form his plan with the help of Han Hao. He also knows that the recording must have been made by Han Hao and sent after his death. Eumenides comes to see him and trades the recording in exchange for Zheng Jiao’s protection and the promise to help her go to the US for the operation. Eumenides says his next opponent is now Ding Ke.
One more chapter done! It’s really going to take me the whole month to read this book.
The four short stories of 불빛 없는 밤의 도시 have all been great, but what I really loved in this collection is that it never gives easy-to-love protagonists. They’re all morally questionable, do condemnable things or blame others for their failure (even though I read it years ago, I remember the protagonist of 인생, 리셋 really falling in this category). 불빛 없는 밤의 도시 and 아름다운 괴물 both featured very interesting characters: they have detestable aspects but it’s also easy to understand where they come from.
Overall a very good collection, but I wish the publisher had stated clearly which stories had already been published and which (if any) are new exclusive ones, because I know at least that the last one, 인생, 리셋, had already been published in a collection from 2022 and the author said she wrote 아름다운 괴물 5 years ago, though I don’t know if it had been published before.
So I started the last short story 인생, 리셋, and it took me a couple of pages to realise that I had already read it: it was featured in the collection of short stories: 밀지 마세요, 사람 탑니다.
It’s very strange, I couldn’t see anywhere that this story (maybe the others too?) had already been published elsewhere, I thought it was a new collection.
밀지 마세요, 사람 탑니다 was so great, featuring stories from different authors with the common theme of Seoul metro. 인생, 리셋 was one of my favourite stories from the collection! I’m not going to re-read it though, so I just finished the book!
I read the book when it came out, and I actually didn’t have a lot of recollection of it. I remember liking it overall, but thinking it wasn’t worth the hype. The idea is good and the plot was entertaining, but there are too many things that are here because the plot needs these elements as devices and foundation, but it just doesn’t make much sense to act like that in the first place. I like when characters and their motivations come first, I want their actions to make sense from their perspective, but in many books, and this one was no exception, they are sacrificed for good tricks and a twisty plot. As a result, some decisions from the protagonists didn’t make much sense imo, and I also found their reactions to be frustratingly unrealistic.
I did enjoy the film much more than the book though, probably because acting was good!
One thing that I disliked though is how over sentimental they made the end, with a stupid piano music in background, like you don’t trust your actors to perform well enough to make the public feel emotional too. I can’t stand this kind of scenes, and it really dragged the film down to me.
Read some pages today (though didn’t have time to go very far). Really loving this novel!
Listened to 玛利亚的手指 a lot today and made good progress. Another really good story!

I finally started Lohen’s SQ! I love it so far! It has good pacing, we spend time with Lohen and we’re learning things about him. I also just reached the point where the plot is becoming really intriguing. There were some funny moments too!
This novel is fantastic, it’s fascinating, suspenseful, sad, and intriguing at the same time. I’m loving the beginning very much.

I’m finally starting 夏と花火と私の死体 today!
I wanted to do things in Genshin this morning, but I spent my time working on the website instead. I’m really motivated to make this crime fiction awards page, it’s going to be so great!!
I want to go back into reading the winners of the Mystery Writers of Japan Award, and more generally, I want to read winners of crime fiction prizes. So I’m working on selecting some awards I want to follow, make a list of winners so I can check the works as I read them. I already did something similar for the MWJA on Notion, but I hated using Notion anyway and stopped updating it at some point. It will be much better when everything is on the website.
Read my daily chapter today!
第二十二章 韩灏之死 (contains spoilers)
A Hua’s two men who were sent to fetch Han Hao were in reality there to kill him, as Han Hao is the only person knowing that A Hua is the instigator of the Lin and Meng’s death. Han Hao manages to kill them both instead, and end up taking A Hua hostage. The police is there too.
A Hua says that his men will kill his wife and son if something happens to him.
Han Hao asks for Yin Jian and threatens to kill A Hua if Yin Jian does not kill him first, which he does.
There’s no proof of A Hua’s involvement in the double murder, so the police lets him go.
I’m working on really organising my reading history and maybe doing author cards. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do! I would like to really organise the books I’m reading, and try to explore the bibliography of authors I like, instead of reading book after book, and forgetting who even wrote it or what it was about a couple of months later.
I have read a lot of different Japanese authors, but now I want to focus on reading more extensively the ones I love.
I didn’t read anything else today, but I finished the short story 아름다운 괴물. It was excellent, really felt like a short novel rather than a short story. I really love how the main character is morally grey, doing disgusting and condemnable things, while at the same time being relatable. I couldn’t help but root for her still, despite everything. Overall, all the three protagonists of the collection have had complex personalities, I find all characters are very well written.
아름다운 괴물 is really good! It feels more like a novel than a short story.
I don’t know if I’ll have time to finish it today, but maybe I’ll try to continue it later!

I started the third short story! It’s also the longest one.
I had originally planned to read half of it today, but I was busy with the website, so I only started it. I really love the beginning, looks very promising!
I really had underestimated the number of books referenced on notes… It’s going to take a while before I sort the DB, and I’ve already spent so much time today on it… Haven’t read as much as I wanted because of it, but it’s a good step forward.
I finished 幸福宝贝, and I really really love Otsuichi’s stories. This one was fantastic, I loved the main character, and I was loving the story so much (I thought it would be a story of friendship or romance), but then all of the sudden I realised I was reading a mystery all along, even though it didn’t feel like it. The end was really good, and at the same time, like many of the short stories I’ve read, it left me quite sad.
Going over all my read Japanese books to add to the new DB, I realise that a good chunk of them are books I didn’t really want to read… I mean, they were not exactly books I didn’t want to read, but rather books I read for other reasons: some were because I was looking for easy books to recommend to Japanese learners… At the time when my blog was still insidethatjapanesebook, some people were asking for recommendations on my blog or Twitter (X), so I felt like I needed to do this kind of content. It was a good experience, I learnt a log of things in the process, and I’ve always loved recommending books to others, so I don’t regret reading these, even though some were very far from what I personally enjoy reading.
What I absolutely regret though are the books I read because everyone was talking about them, or because I thought that, as someone who reviewed Japanese books, I ought to have read. There are so many books that fall in this category, and no surprise, I rarely ended up liking them. But it’s hard to not get influenced, especially because at the time, I was on Twitter. Like when a book got translated into English everyone was talking about it, praising it like it was the best thing ever published, but me, I don’t think these books are anything special, they’re good yes, but good books are everywhere, so I might as well read the ones I want to read rather than the ones that are the current trendy thing.
So now I’m making a promise to myself: life is too short, books are too many, I’ll only read the books I want to read, not the ones that are hyped, not the ones it would be nice to have read, not the ones you read to look smart, educated and trendy, just the ones that trigger that spark of excitement when you see them or hear about them for the first time.
I’m going over the list of books imported from notes, just to check that author and titles are correct, add the cover if needed, etc. It’s a repetitive and boring task that does not require much attention, so I’ve been listening to my audiobook, 失踪假日 by Otsuichi, while doing it. This allowed me to finish the first short story, but now I have to take a break to digest it. It was such a great story once again!
It’s happening, I’m actually working on importing my reading history from notes to the new website. It will probably be missing some books, but it’s better than nothing.
It’s such a shame that I didn’t have a proper DB before, it was just me posting without any kind of formatting…
It’s going to take a while to make everything look clean, associate a cover to every book and check that title and author are correct.
Finished chapter 21! That’s exactly why I love the series, this chapter was so great!
第二十一章 血案真相 (contains spoilers)
During an anticipated football match featuring Longyu’s team on the day of A Hua’s execution date, both A Hua and Du Mingqiang are in the stadium, while Longyu Group security guards are hidden everywhere, thinking that Eumenides will strike during the match.
In a hotel near the stadium, Luo Fei, Yin Jian and Mu Jianyun are in a room, while Liu Song is disguised as Eumenides (using the foam in his clothes) alone in another room. Han Hao is watching Liu Song through CCTV from the hotel basement. When fans create turmoil in the stadium, he goes to Liu Song’s room and shoots him before hiding in another room. Liu Song had a bulletproof vest, so he didn’t die, but Han Hao managed to escape and is met by two of A Hua’s men.
Luo Fei had explained everything to the team beforehand:
A Hua and Meng Fangliang were accomplices to kill Lin Henggan, the whole thing had nothing to do with Eumenides. Motive for Meng Fangliang was succession stuff, but for A Hua, it was also a way to attract Eumenides. Meng Fangliang is the one dressed up as Eumenides who waved at the camera, the clothes and foam were hidden in the drawer. He killed Lin Henggan. When entering the room, A Hua and his man killed Meng Fangliang. He placed a fake death notice in the drawer so that the police don’t find it strange to find it empty. A Hua then let Du Mingqiang write his article to provoke Eumenides, in the hope he would appear at the stadium.
Luo Fei also rightly guessed that Han Hao and A Hua were accomplices, with the same goal of killing Eumenides, which would also explain why Han Hao was hiding so well from Yin Jian’s efforts to find him.
Luo Fei’s plan was for Liu Song to disguise as Eumenides to attract either the real Eumenides who would want to see who was impersonating him, and/or the A Hua/Han Hao gang who would genuinely think he was Eumenides.
Just bought 夏と花火と私の死体 on Booklive!
I’m only just at the beginning, but I love it and it’s crazy how we’re immediately drawn into the story and we start caring for the characters right away. The author is such a good story teller…
The first short story is also extremely easy to listen to! I’m really happy about that, it means I can listen to it while doing other things, I don’t need to be 100% focused or look at the text.
The narration is very good, background noises are okayish, but I would have preferred the audiobook without the background music that is sometimes added.
I decided what would be my next Japanese read: 夏と花火と私の死体, Otsuichi’s debut novel (I think it’s a novel?), it was first published in 1996, which means Otsuichi was very young when he wrote it! I’m really looking forward to read it.
I’ll add it to the DB and buy in tomorrow!
第二十章 泡沫人 (contains spoilers)
Du Mingqiang has written his article, it shows how Meng Fangliang had shown remorse for his crimes and came out a new man after serving his prison sentence, putting Eumenides actions in a bad light.
Luo Fei cracked the mystery of the white plastic foam: it was used to make the man’s stature look bigger than it really was.
During the investigation, A Hua had mentioned A Sheng’s accident and said he thought he was killed by Eumenides. Luo Fei retraces A Hua’s investigation: A Sheng’s lighter brings him to the 绿阳春餐厅, he sees the three men on CCTV, but also spots Chengyu and immediately suspects him. The profile Mu Jianyun had done of Eumenides also matches: it’s possible he was drawn to the music and the violinist. Luo Fei interrogates her and she reveals that her father was Zheng Haoming, the detective in charge of the explosion case 18 years ago, who also suspected Eumenides to be active again. (He is the policeman who investigates by taking pictures of internet cafe users at the beginning of volume 1). He is also the first new victim of Eumenides. Zheng Jia thinks the case is closed with Yuan Zhibang’s death. Luo Fei asks her about the customer who sent her flowers, but she says she does not know him.
That was an important chapter, things are taking a turn now it looks like!
I can’t decide what my next Japanese book will be… I’m always drawn to those honkaku mysteries with closed-circles and locked-room mysteries, but I often end up being disappointing. Not necessarily because the book is bad, but because I’m not that interested in tricks, more on characters and motives.
Maybe I’ll just end up choosing another book by Otsuichi, but my current audiobook is also Otsuichi, and I just finished ZOO, and my last audiobook, which I also just finished, was the Chinese translation of メアリー・スーを殺して. So I’m afraid I’ll get tired of the author’s style, but at the same time, I don’t feel like this could really happen…
I can’t find the time to start Lohen’s SQ, and I’m waiting for the ascension materials it gives to fully level him up. I’ll only try an Abyss run with him once he is 90 and talents 9. I still don’t know if I want to double crown him…
Now I’m also thinking about creating author pages on the website. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and I used a plugin on Wordpress that allowed me to do that, but even though the plugin was really great, it also did not correspond exactly to what I wanted to do, so I’ve never been happy with this page on the old blog.
Here I think I could do exactly what I want to, the question is whether I have the courage to bring older datas from notes to this website. Or I could start from scratch with what I have here, but it would feel strange to say I only read like 2 books by Higashino.
That’s a new project to think about and work on!
Finished Centurion’s Anecdote, I liked it! The end was a bit underwhelming though…
I don’t have the courage to try and unlock the other ending, I’m not a fan of the multiple endings mechanic, so I’m giving up on the weapon ascension mats, but I do have the weapon!

As per tradition, my first Abyss clear was Xiao and Mizuki! Clearing with those two makes me so happy every single time
First half:
Durin is back on NO for the clear… I’m so glad I pulled him for Xiao, because it’s so much easier to clear content that requires pyro.
And yes, I chose to play Xianyun instead of Nicole, but this Abyss is actually a good way to test the Durin-Nicole core for Xiao, maybe I’ll try later in the month if I feel like it.
Second half:
I didn’t think it would work because of the Suanni, but they did it!
第十九章 现场勘查 (contains spoilers)
Mu Jianyun and Zeng Rihua join the team on the crime scene, they go over possibilities without success until the discovery of clothes and a rope indicating that Eumenides went through the window. Liu Song just arrived (bringing Du Mingqiang with him) and doesn’t think someone could be able to reach the room from outside.
They also find white plastic foam with blood on it, and Luo Fei remembers seeing similar foam on the street.
A Hua wants to use Du Mingqiang to change public opinion on Eumenides, Du Mingqiang says that Lin Henggan and Meng Fangliang‘s death notice gave “association with gang” as reason, but Meng Fangliang already served a prison sentence for that, so he was legally punished, and Eumenides should not have a valide reason to target him.
Luo Fei accepts under the condition that he can reads Du Mingqiang’s article before it gets published.
There’s a drawer in Deng Hua’s desk that was closed, no one, including A Hua and Long Ge, has ever seen what was inside. Police opens it, it contains A Hua’s death notice to take effect in a few days. Reason is also association with gangs.
Chengyu visits Zheng Jiao for her birthday, he thinks that taking care of her is his responsibility.
Read chapter 19 today too!
Bringing reading history to the new website.
Part of me wants to bring all my read books to this new website, but the task sounds daunting… I could start with Taiwanese and HK authors, because there’s not a lot of them and they are listed on Readmoo. For Japanese, most of the books I read are on my older website, so maybe there’s a way to fetch them from there? As for Korean, it’s all over the place or nowhere at all…
I won’t be doing full book pages, just write the name of the author and the title of the book somewhere so that stats like “number of books read by author” would be more accurate.
What I could also do is only add books for authors I’m currently reading. So if I start a book by an author I already read, then I could make a list of the already read books.
Or maybe I’ll get too lazy and drop the idea entirely.
I loved the second volume as much as the first one, it’s crazy to think that all the short stories of ZOO are, without exception, equally fascinating. My favourite ones were 血液を探せ!and 神の言葉, but I loved them all.
The last story was much shorter than I thought… and so strange too!
Finished chapter 18, this one was really great, I might just continue and read 19 today as well.
第十八章 密室血案 (contains spoilers)
The police arrives at Longyu Group where Lin Henggan and Meng Fangliang have just been killed. It turns out that they had both received a death notice.
A Hua was in charge of their protection, he supervised the operations and worked with his men, and Lin Henggan’s men. Long ge is also someone close to Lin Henggan. A Hua didn’t ask for help from the police. When Luo Fei asks him why, he reminds him that Deng Hua was killed by the Captain of the Criminal Police.
There is a gap in the surveillance video footage, and a man is visible in the room, even waving at the camera.
After ruling out several possibilities, Luo Fei and the others still have no clue how Eumenides could have enter the room and kill the two men.

I wanted to try Lohen in the current Abyss so I did a run last minute! He is still half built (level 69, talents 6/6 and no Witch’s Homework yet).
First half:
I tried with Citlali, but it didn’t work, I was missing a few seconds on the third chamber. Changed to Kazuha and cleared everything with a lot of margin. Lohen’s damage was really low given his build. I was also not doing his combos really. But Durin’s damage is impressive. I never really played Durin dark form before, he was just a Xiao support. But with Lohen, I gave him his DPS set, and I’m really shocked by his numbers!
Second half:
The support team from Nod-Krai. It’s probably not optimal to make them all fight for hydro, but the team is mega strong still, and I find it fun to play.
I finished the short story 落ちる飛行機の中で, I loved it!
I’m tempted to read the last one too, because it’s very short, but I’ll keep it for tomorrow instead.
失踪假日
I’ll continue to listen to Chinese translations of Otsuichi’s works. I know it’s strange to not read them in Japanese, but I really enjoyed the experience of listening to 殺死瑪麗蘇 in Mandarin.
This time, the name of the narrators is mentioned in the audiobook, but I have no idea how to write their names.
第十七章 风波再起 (contains spoilers)
During a team reunion, Liu Song reports the latest developments with Du Mingqiang. Yin Jian says there’s no trace of Han Hao. He still hasn’t found Chen Tianqiao either but gives a report on his profile: he has constantly borrowed money without repaying, and is the instigator of a large scale fraud.
At Longyu Group, despite a tight surveillance supervised by A Hua, someone manages to access Lin Henggan and Meng Fangliang sleeping room.
Either I don’t understand what I’m reading, or there’s a problem with the book. Talking about Han Hao and Eumenides, the book says:
那个“很坏很坏的坏人”,自然就是Eumenides! 正是他害得韩灏身负血案,不得不抛妻弃子,亡命天涯。
What?! Han Hao shot his colleague by mistake, then decided to kill the witness to protect himself. When another witness resurfaced, Han Hao decided once again to protect his position, by killing him and killing the captain of the SWAT team Xiong Yuan too who was protecting the witness. So this guy not only killed a policeman by mistake, but then coldly murdered three other persons to protect himself! Then he also killed Deng Hua thinking it was Eumenides but oh well. Eumenides had nothing to do with the shooting of the colleague and the first murder, and even though he did stage the setup for the two following murders, Han Hao didn’t have to play along, he is the one who took the decision to kill Xiong Yuan to continue hiding his secret. I just don’t get it, why is the novel describing it as if Eumenides was responsible and Han Hao was a victim?
More generally, I find the whole Han Hao thing very strange, like the man killed innocent people to protect his position and privileges, what could be more despicable? Even Eumenides kills for justice. But even though they had knowledge of all this, Yin Jian and his colleagues were still very respectful towards Han Hao at the beginning of the novel. It also always seems like Liu Song is singled out as being strongly vindictive for personal reasons - he loved and admired Xiong Yuan - but his attitude should actually be the norm rather than the exception.
And since I started pointing out things that bother me, it’s the same with Ding Ke. The single one argument to prove how good a policeman he was is the 100% success rate, something repeated several times in the novel. But to me, this looks extremely bad: a 100% conviction rate screams wrongful convictions. And everyone sighing in admiration when just hearing his name is just cringe. And when the characters thought that Ding Ke quit the police because he couldn’t face a failure, they still admired him? What is there to admire when someone flees as soon as things don’t go their way? But worse, we later know that Ding Ke covered for Zhibang, and the novel makes it look like it was the right thing to do, and he resigned to what? maintain his integrity? Like, knowing he covered for his favourite student - and not a slight mistake, Zhibang did kill a man (although I’m sure, we’ll learn he had no choice or a good reason to act so), shows him under a very bad light, but it’s almost described as a noble sacrifice.
I finished chapter 16, and I was not convinced at all by the whole thing, especially Huang Jieyuan’s plan to catch the murderer of the 1/12 case. It also felt very repetitive, like for example, we already went through the whole description of the special performance given at Jieyuan’s bar, but we have to go through the same exact description a second time.
Some details were also strange and not convincing.
I also find that some things that I would consider flaws in the novel but that I accept because it doesn’t prevent me from enjoying it, are becoming more and more pronounced to the point when it’s becoming irritating. (Some generalisations about policemen, women, etc., a tendency to over explain things that were obvious in the first place, some sexist attributions of roles, like Mu Jianyun being here mostly to fill the “woman” role - she can’t bear gory descriptions and gets really unsettled by the performance - a strong tendency to idealise characters, they are all so clever, perfect, diligent, fighting for justice, etc., and maybe it’s a writing style, but constantly adding small commentaries, for example describing a scene and then adding an explanation or a generalisation as to what happened or why characters react as they did, often feels like the author thinks the reader is stupid.)
I’m still really enjoying the book!
第十六章 “一·一二”碎尸案 (contains spoilers)
Luo Fei and Mu Jianyun continue their discussion with Huang Jieyuan who talks about the 1/12 case. Given that he was in charge, he knows the case better than anyone: in 1992, body parts of a female students are found at different places, some have been boiled. The killer was never found, some body parts were never recovered. Huang Jieyuan asked for Ding Ke’s help who told him to come back in two weeks then completely disappeared. Huang Jieyuan was forced to step down when the case remained unsolved.
They watch Huang Jieyuan’s special performance. He explains that he is baiting the 1/12 killer by using:
- heavy metal music, because the police found recordings in Feng Chunling’s possessions, but he overlooked its importance at the time because he didn’t read English (and apparently, no one did around him, and he also decided to ignore it rather than ask for a translator? that sounds unrealistic but oh well…)
- sadistic and murdering impulse linked to the music
- skill with a blade
He thinks that Feng Chunling knew her killer, and that they got close through their common passion for heavy metal.
He found a likely suspect: Want Wenchao.
He says that if he can find the murderer of the 1/12 case, it’s possible that Ding Ke will come back (I don’t understand the logic behind this reasoning. Assuming Ding Ke really did disappear because he couldn’t solve the case - which sounds doubtful, because we now know it’s not the reason why he resigned, so why would it be the reason why he disappear? Characters strangely do not question this - it would be so weird to reappear when the case is solved, or is it just me?), so Luo Fei says he will help if needed.

Chapter 16 is great, and we finally get to know more about something the author has been teasing for a while, but I was so tired today, I could barely keep my eyes opened while reading, so I preferred to stop mid-chapter. I’ll continue tomorrow!
I can’t really express how much I loved this audiobook. It’s kind of scary that one person can write so many unique and fascinating short stories (I’m currently reading Zoo, which is equally incredible).
Otsuichi’s stories all have this strange mix of sadness and loneliness, but also something warm and tender, while being excellent mysteries or horror stories or delivering really unsettling plots or denouements.
I loved all the stories in the collection, but 山羊座的友人 and 宗像與鋼筆事件 are my favourites.
And as I said before, I can’t find the name of the narrator, but the narration was top-notch.
Now that I have Mika, it makes farming 空羽蛾 for Lohen much easier than it was for Linnea!
I can’t wait to start Lohen’s SQ but I didn’t have time this weekend… I’ll wait to have the ascension materials from his SQ to fully ascend him too, so it slows down his build. I’m working on building Prune in the meantime.
I looked at which Otsuichi books were available as audiobooks on weixin dushu, and there’s 失踪假日 (失踪HOLIDAY), 只有你听到 (きみにしか聞こえない CALLING YOU) and 寂寞的頻率 (さみしさの周波数), which are all early works. If I’m not mistaken they are respectively from 2000, 2001 and 2002.
So that’s perfect, I’m going to listen to them in this order, they’re going to be my next audiobooks. I might listen to something else in-between to change things up, but these three audiobooks are on my list for this year.
My flashcards retention rate has been very bad yesterday and today… I need to focus!
I used to think that Udaru Oshita (大下宇陀児) and Jokichi Hikage (日影丈吉) were my favourite Japanese authors, but now I think it’s Otsuichi (乙一).
I finished 伊娃.瑪莉.克羅斯, I didn’t need to look at the text after all, it was easy to follow once I got started. Loved this one as well! Very disturbing, but very good!
I took the Miliastra personality quiz and my result was “Master Strategist of Liyue“.
I’ve been having fun with “One Stroke Puzzle”, “Nonogram Scrolls” and “Flappy Linnea” among others to farm primogems. Then I spent 15 minutes customising my Manekina. Some standard fates gave me the autumn-theme outfit I wanted so badly when it came out, but now the weather’s much too hot to wear that…
I finished the combat event, and it was so much fun!!! I loved it!! I’m hoping they will add this as a regular combat feature one day.
I named 咕咕丸 as champion

I loved this film much more than I expected to! I’m not surprised that the film leaves us with more questions than answers, but I find it a little bit too opened in the end, though it’s been fun to try and give it my own interpretation.
I found some scene surprisingly terrifying too.
I finished chapter 5, and this one felt oddly out of place. The chapter was okay overall, but there was a whole passage where characters seemed to understand something from the first time, when we already went over it previously. I’m pretty sure it must be a mistake, it felt very odd. Not only do the characters realise something everyone already knew, but we even already went through the consequences of it in a previous chapter.
I still enjoyed reading it, and I do still find the novel very suspenseful, but this chapter in particular felt quite repetitive.
第十五章 往事初现 (contains spoilers)
Luo Fei and Mu Jianyun are invited to Huan Jieyuan’s club.
It turns out that the two cases (both the 4/7 Chen Tianqiao’s robbery case and the 1/12 case) are important for Jieyuan because Ding Ke quit the force during the robbery case so Jieyuan took his place, and he himself quit the police after the 1/12 case.
Luo Fei tells him about the recent discovery: Zhang Cuiping suddenly found enough money for her operation, but when the police enquired about it, she gave up on the operation to protect the source of the money. And the policeman who questioned her deliberately hid this information from the investigation team and did not record it anywhere. Luo Fei asks for the name of this policeman and both him and Jianyun are shocked when they learn it was Ding Ke himself.
They arrive at the conclusion that Ding Ke didn’t quit the police because he faced an unsolved case, but because he solved it: he understood that his favourite student on whom he had placed a lot of hopes and expectations, Yuan Zhibang, was the culprit of the robbery case. Either he sent Zhibang in prison, which also meant that Cuiping had to give the money back, or he covered for him, which he did. Given that this action was against his integrity as a policeman, he retired.
I have mixed feelings about this series, on the one hand, I think it was excellent as a young adult horror series, on the other hand, it was a “not for me” kind of series, so there’s a lot of things that I disliked.
If you like both k-dramas in general, high school stuff and horror, then you’ll probably love this drama.
But personally, I really dislike k-dramas in general. It doesn’t mean that I don’t like Korean series (I absolutely love series like Hellbound or Kingdom, and Karma is one of my favourite series of all times), but you know the set of rules that make k-dramas kind of a genre in itself, especially the feel-good and romance ones. I found that this series had a lot of those typical k-drama stuff that I absolutely cannot bear like characters freezing and looking dumb for several seconds when situations call for a prompt response, useless dialogues when the situation is urgent, and very clichéed and unrealistic characters. I really dislike this kind of perfect characters: Hajun clearly has financial difficulties, but he is a mathematic genius who does well at school. Se-a has a very traumatic past, lives quasi alone, but still found the courage to fight for her dreams, etc. On the contrary, the rich and privileged Nari is the most ambiguous one.
As a result, Nari was by far the most interesting character for me, she’s the only one who felt real, who seemed to have emotions like a normal human being, in opposition to her k-drama stereotyped friends. The two girls at the origin of the curse were also very interesting and I really liked the episode focused on them. I also found Se-a quite dull which is a shame because she is the main character of the series. Overall, the “bad” characters like Nari and Siwon were the most interesting ones, compared to our “good” perfect cast of heroes who have no flaws at all.
I also found some episodes better than others, not really liking the more action-focused ones.
Overall, it was entertaining enough, but even though the story was good, I was so annoyed by the characters that it prevented me from really liking the series. Probably won’t watch if there’s a second season coming.
I played a little bit of Critter Crash, I had a broken Dynamo deck which got me my best result.
I’ll continue playing until I get the skin, but I probably won’t have time to go beyond that.
Critter Crash is actually the perfect thing to do while watching the World Cup.
I’m debating whether I’m going to add entries for all the film and series I watch or keep it for the ones I watch in my target languages. I started a physical notebook for Korean films only, and this website replaced it, but it’s not just limited to Korean films.
I forget everything if I don’t actively try to recall it or make some kind of output about it. Maybe everyone is like this, or maybe it’s a problem with me, but I absolutely cannot remember the plot of films, series or books I watched or read in the past. That’s why I’m obsessed with writing things down, taking notes and writing reviews.
So even though my website was focused on language learning, it could be nice to just record all the films and series I watch just to not forget about them…
I found another word whose meaning was a surprise to me:
| Word | Reading | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| 成见 | chéng jiàn | preconceived idea, bias, prejudice |
Because the hanzi are so common, it felt like I should have known the meaning of the word, but the real meaning was not what I imagined.
I continued the story a bit, I finished chapter 9. I like it so far, but it’s also not my favourite.
I finished Varka SQ, it was insane!! He got a crazy trial, I can’t remember any character having so much combat in their story! (though to be fair, there are a lot of SQ I haven’t done yet). I loved the last part a lot, the cutscenes were great too, and the combat was really cool. Thank goodness I haven’t played his story during his banner! Varka’s playstyle is so good
Cleared Lucidscape! I always try to speedrun with my best characters. Teams were:
First half:
They cleared in 4 rounds. I did a retry, but I couldn’t clear in 3 rounds no matter what. Maybe the team is not optimal, because Fatutu didn’t do anything.
Second half:
Not sure what this team is exactly, but they cleared in 3 rounds no problem (Ezio is P5 and Charon P3). I didn’t play Cassandra at all.
There were only two character names in 神の言葉, so I’m not doing a character list. Even for Closet it was not really necessary.
I finished 神の言葉, another incredibly fascinating story. It’s kind of scary to think that someone can write so many unique yet equally impactful stories.
I really loved this one, the end was so striking and terrifying too… But what I loved the most is the protagonist, it was such an interesting character, not just his personality and how it made him struggle, but that he was aware of it.
I went through Lorentz Butterfly story. I found some parts interesting, some less, so I skimmed through them. I initially thought I would skip the whole character story, so I’m glad I went through it. But yeah, I don’t feel invested in this patch at all.
With Anki, my biggest struggle was to add cards regularly so that I could study new things every day. With my new flashcards, the struggle is to not add too many cards at once… It’s so easy now, I have popup dictionary on all the texts I import to the website, and I can add them to the flashcard from the popup window directly, so it’s tempting to simply add all the words I look up. And given that the sentence they’re coming from (as well as all the sentences saved on the website that contain the word) are shown as example sentences on the card, I also don’t need to worry about adding context.
Adding new words used to take so much time…
Starting reading Mika’s character story! I don’t like reading in-game so I take the text from the wiki. With new characters, I want to only read as I really unlock them in-game, but given that Mika is not in the party, I’ll just read everything even if I don’t increase friendship with him yet.
I had started the last short story, 伊娃.瑪莉.克羅斯, then given up because it was too hard and I couldn’t follow well enough. I gave it another try while keeping an eye on the text this time, which makes it very easy. I listened to 1/3 already, I don’t know if I’ll continue to read along while listening, or try to listen only from now on. Now that I know the context, it should be easier.
「精彩到让人愿意失忆了再看一次的小说」可是最高的评价啊。你们也是这个级别的朋友。
— 彩特琳德
Finished chapter 14 and the first part too! There are two parts in total in the book.
I’m halfway through the book now, still loving it very much!
I’m still in the middle of the second chapter… I love how almost each time we get to do a different activity or game. On the one hand, I’m happy to still have these to do, so I can also meet Columbina still, but on the other hand, will I ever get the glider… not before Snezhnaya that’s for sure…
第十四章 借刀伤人 (contains spoilers)
Liu Song and Du Mingqiang go in a restaurant where four men try to attack him. Liu Song and his men capture them easily.
Luo Fei recalls the day when Chen Tianqiao was attacked, Yuan Zhibang was willing to tell him what he had done, but Luo Fei chose to keep his rendez-vous with Meng Yun rather than listen to him.
Luo Fei interrogates the four men who attacked Du Mingqiang and realises that it’s a set up by Mingqiang himself. The leader of the group is Chang Kai, a man who got away with killing someone with his car thanks to his family money and relations. Du Mingqiang attacked him relentlessly in articles and revealed his identity.
Knowing that he was protected by Liu Song, he purposely revealed his location to Chang Kai so that the police capture him. Liu Song settles the score with him, and Du Mingqiang offers to cooperate, which will give more freedom to Liu Song to participate in the team efforts to find Wen Chengyu.
Did a lot of exploration today, especially the part of the new region that’s the most South-East. I had completely overlooked that part and hadn’t even unlocked the TP! This brought my exploration of 风息山 to 84, and the total exploration of the two regions to 75%, so almost there! Next time I’ll explore a little bit more in the Temple of Space, reaching those 80% will be quite easy.
Did a lot of things in Genshin today, Nicole’s quest part 3, Prune’s Witch’s Homework (it was adorable!), some exploration, visited Columbina, and I just did the introductory dialogue of the new event (so happy to see Kazuha!! ) but I haven’t started it yet.
I still haven’t done the new IT, but now I might as well wait for Lohen to be IT ready. I think that even at 70, he would be a big upgrade to my cryo roster!
Finished chapter 13, almost halfway through!
第十三章 案中案 (contains spoilers)
Luo Fei and Mu Jianyun study Chen Tianqiao’s complaint following the 1.30 case. He said that both his wife and himself have been attacked during the night at their home, then he was tortured into revealing the code of his safe. He said that his aggressor was Wen Hongbing’s accomplice. Nothing relevant was found on the crime scene.
Mu Jianyun thinks that Chen Tianqiao made the story up, but if it was that easy, Ding Ke would have spotted it. It seemed that, on the contrary, Ding Ke thought that the two cases were linked. At the same time, if the aggressor who took Chen Tianqiao’s money was Wen Hongbing’s friend, then the money could have paid for Zhang Cuiping‘s hospital fees, but we know she died soon after.
Luo Fei and Mu Jianyun visit the Chen Dayang, the doctor who took care of Cuiping at the time. He remembers that the family was poor, but after Wen Hongbing’s death, Zhang Cuiping said she had found enough money to pay for her operation, she explained it was money her husband had loaned to someone, and that she got the money back. But a policeman went and questioned Chen Dayang and Cuiping about it. Chen Dayang didn’t hide the money’s existence. After the policeman’s visit, Cuiping changed her mind and refused the operation. This visit hasn’t been recorded in the case file. Luo Fei shows Zhibang’s photograph and asks if he was the policeman in question. Dayang says he wasn’t, but he did come often take care of Cuiping.
Luo Fei and Mu Jianyun come to some conclusions: Cuiping didn’t want the police to know about the money, so she refused the operation. Because the money must have been illegally acquired, she could not legally give it to Chengyu so she entrusted it to her sister who must have kept it for herself while sending Chengyu to the orphanage after his mother’s death. Zhibang is certainly the man who stole the money from Chen Tianqiao, as a way to make up for killing Hongbing.
The identity of the policeman is still a mystery, Luo Fei tries to contact Huang Jieyuan to ask him about it, but he is not available (resting before one of the club’s “performances”).
Her character story 1 was so sad it made me cry. I kind of want to equip the bubble pistol gadget when she’s in the party, no actually I’m going to look at all the toy gadgets I have in the backpack and equip them all!
I completely forgot about Reed! I mean I forgot we got her for free and she was sitting at zero friendship in the suitcase. All my other characters have max friendship now.
I added her to the Wilderness, and I’ll need to redo my farming stages! My teams are always Ezio + whoever needs friendship levels.
Why so many names!?
I finished the first short story, 불빛 없는 밤의 도시, and I think it was a really strange one.
It feels like there was a lot of interesting threads, but none was really fully developed. Maybe it would have been better as a novel? For example, the idea of the zero lights nights was really interesting, and we do follow the different steps of its implementation, but at the same time, the character of Jae-u could have been more developed I felt like. The idea of linking those zero lights nights to crime was also very interesting. But challenges like CCTV being useless, were not really the focus of the short story, event though this had a lot of potential. Similarly, the tensions with the environmental maintenance workers could have been an interesting thread if the story had focused more on that. The end was very good, but also felt strange to me, maybe because we never get to know the characters completely. I feel like this short story could have easily been a novel, because there was so many things going on.
I wanted to study Mika’s voicelines but the audio is not on the cn wiki. So strange! I don’t want to study in-game, so I’ll just read his story for now, in parallel with Prune’s.
Chapter 11 done!
第十二章 父子关系 (contains spoilers)
Ding Zeng says that his father Ding Ke quit the police because of the 一三〇 case, not for health reasons as was officially stated. Two months after the case, Chen Tianqiao reported being robbed.
Luo Fei and Mu Jianyun think that Ding Ke quit the police because he was unable to face a case he couldn’t solve. So when he disappeared 10 years earlier, it must be for the same reason. Luo Fei knows that the case in question is the 一。一二 case.
After gathering some more information Luo Fei and Jianyun conclude that Ding Zeng is workaholic who does not seem to have any sentiment and is not interested in building a family. Wu Qiong used to be his student and is in love with him, but he doesn’t seem to realise it or care. He resents his father for neglecting his family for his work, which led to his parents divorce. It’s then plausible that the two haven’t been in contact for 10 years.
Next step is to investigate Chen Tianqiao’s claim following the 1/30 case and see if the 1/12 case was really the reason behind Ding Ke’s disappearance.
可是转念一想,只要是自己选择的人生方式,不管别人怎么看待,对选择者本人来说肯定是最满意的一种吧。你不理解他,他同样还不理解你呢。这个世界本来就是多元的,又何必去妄自揣测别人的生活?

I had a really scary moment when Weixin Dushu was not working on my e-reader anymore. I was using the mobile app, and it was working just fine until now, but apparently, an automatic update broke it. Solution was to install the 微信读书墨水屏版 directly from ink.qq.com instead of downloading from the app store.
It works now!! And the display looks much better too, menus, comments, everything is more adapted and looks better. It’s really an upgrade compared to the mobile app!
I read Closet, this short story was really brilliant! I loved it so so much.
The first short story is really not easy to read, so I’m progressing slowly. I wanted to finish it today, but it’s probably not happening.
Lohen’s story details and kits aren’t updated on the Chinese wiki yet, so I’ll probably won’t start studying them today.
I finally got around to reading Prune’s kit… it’s so hard to read character kits in Chinese, but I decided to really immerse and stop watching guides in English or read anything in English about the characters. So from what I understand, I need to stack attack on her, and ideally, I would like to have her burst up too… There’s also a special mention if the DPS swirls, so I guess she only gets her full value with Varka or DPS Venti? I might just play her a bit in overworld for fun, but I won’t completely build her right now, and I don’t think I could slot her in any of my teams right now.
It’s a shame that Lohen is really not the best choice to farm his boss and his talent domain…
第十一章 敌友难分 (contains spoilers)
Mu Jianyun tries to persuade Du Mingqiang to stay confined in police quarters instead of roaming freely, but he refuses and says that Luo Fei also doesn’t want it. Mingqiang wants the scoop, and Luo Fei wants two things: use Mingqiang as bait to catch Eumenides, and let Eumenides kill Mingqiang.
Jianyun confronts Luo Fei, accusing him of secretly approving Eumenides’ killings, and even make them possible by not obstructing Eumenides’ operations. Her proof is Deng Hua’s case, she knows Luo Fei suspected Han Hao, but he still let him control the operations, which resulted in Han Hao killing Deng Hua as Eumenides had planned. Luo Fei does not tell Jianyun the real reason why he let Han Hao do what he wanted (we know from vol.1 that Zhibang had planted a fake document on Jianyun to make Deng Hua target her, if Deng Hua had survived, he would have had Jianyun killed, so Luo Fei let Eumenides kill Deng Hua to protect her), and let her believe he secretly agrees Eumenides’ victims deserved to die. He asked her to keep this secret.
Their next step is to find Ding Ke’s son.
Reading character stories in Chinese
I’ve been lazy with reading character stories lately, because I can’t deny that with content in Chinese, I just don’t have the motivation to start reading character stories in-game, with everything else there is to read. It’s really a shame, so I’m going to study character stories from the wiki instead, that way I can paste them to my learning Chinese website and use the dictionary. I don’t know if I’ll have the courage or time to catch up on older characters, but I’m starting with my latest ones: Prune, Lohen and Mika.
I finally started the story, I love it!! I’m watching on bilibili instead of playing in-game, I wish I could just listen to it and not have to always look at the screen, but it’s too difficult. I can follow quite well, but I need to read the subtitles in Chinese.
I love Loggerhead the most, I love her voice so much, so melodious! Then I also really like 野木蓝.
Finished chapter 10! This book is such a page-turner, exactly like the first one.
I don’t know why but the total number of pages on weixin dushu never stops to increase as I read. These are e-book pages, but I didn’t change the font nor the size. I noticed this with all the books I read on the platform.
第十章 诱饵与枷锁 (contains spoilers)
Zeng Rihua found the identity of the so-called journalist who interviewed Wu Yinwu: his name is Du Mingqiang. The police found a death notice at his address and he is currently being detained. The date of the execution is smeared with ink and is not visible. Du Mingqiang is pretentious and arrogant, thinks himself a genius and sees the death notice as an opportunity for a scoop rather than a threat.
The team discusses the plan to protect Mingqiang. Mu Jianyun knows that Luo Fei intentionally revealed the details of Wu Yinwu’s death to Wen Chengyu to bait him to attack the journalist. But she also thinks that Chengyu used a pre-existing smear to hide the date, because he saw through Luo Fei’s plan. He is now forcing the police to protect Mingqiang for a whole month while he can fully concentrate on finding the truth behind his father case.
For Luo Fei though, the priority is to find the two witnesses: himself and Jianyun will look for Ding Ke while Yin Jian and Rihua will look for Chen Tianqiao. Liu Song is tasked with protecting Mingqiang.

There’s something with Zhao Haohui’s writing style I always find strange. We’re always following the same characters, but sometimes (or rather often), the author conceals their identity for a while (like the first paragraphs of a new section), sometimes even describe them (appearance, age, etc.), and after a while says: this man is Luo Fei, and the young man beside him is Zeng Rihua.
I don’t know, I find it odd every single time, I don’t know what purpose it serves, because usually the reader already knows which character we’re talking about, there’s no surprise.

I just got one Mika on the Lohen pulls, so now I finally have all the 4-star characters in the game. I’m quite happy too, because I like Mika a lot, I absolutely loved him in the Waterborne Poetry event! I’m not going to build him yet, but I’m going to study his voicelines and his story. I’m not even sure what his kit is doing exactly… later I might level him to IT requirements.
I went to pity and won my 50/50, it’s such a relief! My primogems count has never been so low…
As usual, I haven’t pre-farmed at all so it might take all the second half of the patch to build him and find him decent artefacts. And I don’t know what his best team is, but I do have Nicole and Durin, so it’s probably okay.
第九章 弑父真凶 (contains spoilers)
The sniper of the Wen Hongbing case is called Zhong Jimin and is now working at a shooting club. Wen Chengyu talks to him and tries to get information on the case. Zhong Jimin reveals that he is not the one who shot Hongbing. Chengyu realises that it must be Yuan Zhibang, but as he was only a trainee, responsibility would have fallen on his superiors, so the shot was attributed to Zhong Jimin. He doesn’t know why Zhibang shot, and he couldn’t see the scene when it happened.
Chengyu makes his escape minutes before Luo Fei, Liu Song and Zeng Rihua arrive at the club.
Chengyu’s next step will be to understand why Zhibang killed his father. so the priority for the team is now to find Ding Ke and Chen Tianqiao who are the only two persons who know exactly what happened.
Chengyu had promised Zheng Jiao he would meet her every day after work, but he says he needs to do take care of something first and won’t be able to see her in the meantime. Her father was killed while working on a case, she says she wants to take revenge. Chengyu tells her he wants to pay for a treatment in the US that could cure blindness.
Started the first short story that gives its name to the collection. I found it hard to read (in terms of language level), but it’s very interesting!
민원전화 한 통마다 이런 식으로 해결 방법을 찾아 기획안을 올린다면 아마 공무원 생활 2년을 채 넘기기 전에 쓰러지고 말 것이다.
I finished studying chapter 2 of 礁与浪的相逢, I only have chapter 3 left! I love this event! I also saw that the 幻友绮旅 event story is already on the Chinese wiki! I’m tempted to start it right away…
So my plan for the second half of the patch is to finish studying 礁与浪的相逢, then do 幻友绮旅, and maybe study Lohen SQ, but only if I like it enough. I don’t think I will study Varka SQ.
불빛 없는 밤의 도시 is a collection of short stories! I thought it was a novel. I’m super happy, because I actually wanted to read short stories in both Japanese and Korean while I was busy with 暗黑者2, but then I saw this book and really wanted to read it, so I chose this one even though I thought it was a novel… It’s a nice surprise!

Wow Lohen’s trailer… this guy feels like a mix of Sparkle and Jane Doe, clearly worth risking going to double pity for him.
I should also have two points of capturing radiance already, so it will help, because I do want Sandrone…
Won’t have time to finish chapter 9 today, but I’m still happy with my reading progress.
I finished chapter 8, it was another extremely suspenseful one!
第八章 网络交锋 (contains spoilers)
The team prepares the confrontation, Zeng Rihua checks the computers of the internet cafe, and Liu Song suggests to choose a member of the SWAT team to impersonate the snipper who killed Wen Hongbing, “Zhong Yun”. The plan is risky, but Luo Fei agrees. The man who accepted to play this part is Yang Lin, he was Xiong Yuan’s best friend.
(We also learn that the man who drove Wu Yinwu to suicide is a journalist who intentionally pushed Yinwu to despair for a good story.)
Wen Chengyu is online, he asked Huang Jieyuan about the details of the 一三〇 case. Huang Jieyuan says that it’s Ding Ke who took Yuan Zhibang on the case, even though he was just a trainee officer at the time. Their plan was to use Wen Hongbing’s family to persuade him to surrender. It so happened that Wen Hongbing’s son, Chengyu, immediately trusted Yuan Zhibang, so Zhibang himself suggested to use the boy to warm up Hongbing’s heart. He bought him toys and put earphones on his ears and brought him to the scene. The dialogue between Yuan Zhibang and Wen Hongbing was recorded, and Ding Ke was listening to it live at the time, but neither Huang Jieyuan nor any member of the operation got to hear the recording afterwards. Huang Jieyuan thinks that the snipper fired by mistake. According to Ding Ke’s expression, the negotiations were going well, and Wen Hongbing was about to turn himself him when the nipper shot. He’s certain it was not Ding Ke’s order. Even though Chengyu was on the scene, he did not realise what had just happened.
Wen Chengyu asks for the sniper’s name, Huang Jieyuan gives him a fake bait that Chengyu immediately dismisses. He shows pictures of all the SWAT members of the time to Huang Jieyuan and shows a footage of his son. Huang Jieyuan gives Yang Lin’s name, but Chengyu wants him to go through all the pictures once.
He then asks to talk to Luo Fei to know how he found the files he was looking for so fast, while revealing how he saw through the garage set up. Luo Fei tells him that Wu Yinwu committed suicide after talking to a journalist.
Chengyu then asks to talk to Mu Jianyun.
In the meantime, Zeng Zhihua has localised Chengyu and Deyang location: a hotel room. He and Liu Song go there, followed by Luo Fei and Huang Jieyuan.
When Liu Song and the others rush in the hotel room, they only find Deyang. Chengyu has left just after the end of his discussion with Huang Jieyuan, and talked to Luo Fei and Mu Jianyun through a phone near to the computer microphone. They find the results of a lie detector test on the computer and Luo Fei understands it must have been hidden in the earphone: Chengyu used it to detect the real sniper when showing the pictures to Huang Jieyuan, and asked to talk to Luo Fei and Jianyun to gain time.

Found my next Korean novel!
Already read:
- 홍학의 자리
- 용의자들
I chose my next Korean read! The latest novel by 정해연, 불빛 없는 밤의 도시. I read two books by this author and loved them both, so I’m confident I will love this one two.
Chapter 8 is very long, I just started it but was too sleepy to really focus, so I didn’t make any real progress today.
I made some progress on the quest, but then there’s a warning saying the next part is going to be long, so I’m keeping this for another day. My goal was to finish it before Lohen’s release, which might not be possible now but it doesn’t really matter.
I finished the WQ, it was much shorter than I anticipated! Very easy too in terms of puzzles and combat. This brought my exploration to 60. I don’t know if there are other quests in the region, but I haven’t found any yet. Now I’m just going to look for treasures with Nicole!

I forgot this set actually gives 20% CR! Thankfully I was a bit short on Durin, so he’s build is not as bad as I initially thought, even though most pieces I found rolled poorly.
My exploration team
My exploration team is all broken supports from the version. I need Nicole to find treasure chests, Lauma because I love using her deer form to run around, Linnea for ore mining and healing, and Columbina is not there for any exploration abilities, but we need her because the team would fall apart otherwise.
I also use the team for farming, Linnea is dealing so much damage, nuking most ennemies, and Lauma’s hold skill can finish off whatever is still alive. Nicole is completely useless as no one scales attack, but I love her burst animation so I do it anytime I get a chance.
I’m not playing any Reverse1999 at the moment, just logging in to do my dailies. I haven’t done the story yet, and I’m somehow not really motivated to do it at all. What I think I will do is listen to it on either YouTube or BiliBili instead of playing in-game, so I can do something else why I listen.
I watched episode 4 of 기리고 and loved this one! I’m right back into the series now.
Young Adult stuff is still not my really my thing, but the series has a lot of great things.
I probably won’t be reading much or at all today, as I’m mostly busy working on the website and adding post layouts.
I read the second story 冷たい森の白い家, such a fascinating, strange and sad story…
Chapter 7 was not an easy read, not just because it was an unpleasant description to read, but it was also more difficult in terms of language level.
第七章 诱伏 (contains spoilers)
Huang Jieyuan is staging sadistic performances in his private bar to find someone. He is contacted by a man from the Public Security Bureau to exchange information: the man wants information on the 一三〇 case in exchange for info on the 一·一二碎尸案. Huang Jieyuan says his notes are in his garage.
We then learn that Huang Jieyuan was in contact with Luo Fei to fool Eumenides and lure him into the garage. Luo Fei and Liu Song do ambush a man paid by Eumenides to get the documents, but they soon after receive a message with a pendant belonging to Jieyuan’s son. The message gives an hour and a place: an internet cafe.
I pulled Durin for Xiao, so I put him on NO and never farmed his DPS set (I did farm the domain a lot, but never found good Rising Winds pieces). But there’s two things happening now:
- I’m thinking of continue playing FFXX rather than the Nico-Durin core for Xiao
- I will pull for Lohen, which means that Durin is probably better on Rising Winds, and that Lohen will need a set of his own anyway!
So I need to find two good sets now, with DPS requirements…

I haven’t watched 기리고 in a while. I liked the first episode, and found the second one even better. I liked that the episode worked in two directions: showing deeper layers of the characters relationship while quickening the pace of the story and diving more into horror. But I found the third episode rather boring, it’s mostly classic horror stuff, not really scary to me, and I was also kind of annoyed that situations happen because of weird lack of communication (하준‘s sister should have told 세아 what she would have to deal with - I know she couldn’t know the extend of the trauma 세아 had gone through that could be used against her, but they could have talked about it, or the shaman could have warned her the demon will try to use her memories and weaknesses to create illusions, or just simply tell her more than just “pass through three doors”. The last trial was really good though!).
So since episode 3, I’ve been less motivated to continue the series, but I won’t give up just yet.
Working on the blog display and post headers is taking much more time than I thought. And I’m so sleepy too, I’m not making good decisions I feel like. I’ll probably continue working on this during the weekend.
This book is incredibly good!!!! I loved it so so much!!
It’s not a found footage per se, but it does have a lot of found footage elements with other media that work better in books than film like mails and forum discussions. The setting is very classic, just your typical strange things happening in a building, but it’s so well done. I love the horror genre, but I’m not easily scared and most of the time, I end up being disappointed by the horror fiction I read or watch. I guess that the more you consume this genre, the less impressed you’re bound to be. But this book was so well executed: it has a good variety of “media” sometimes we follow the main characters, sometimes we watch or read past documents. It has extremely good and scary scenes, like the kind that really sends chills down your spine. Reading the book really felt like watching a film, it’s well written and reads very easily, once you started, it’s just impossible to put down. The end was excellent too.
I thought I would continue 죽은 집에 관한 기록 today because I didn’t touch it yesterday, and just like that I finished it. This is the definition of a page-turner!
Chapter 6 read!
第六章 同是天涯沦落人 (contains spoilers)
Wen Chengyu talks to the violinist, she’s on her guard at first but warms up when she realises that he understands her music. Her father just passed away, he was a policeman. Someone, probably A Hua, went to see her about A Sheng’s death, thinking it might be linked to the tumult he caused at the restaurant. The violinist, Zheng Jia, thinks Wen Chengyu might be involved.
Zheng Zihua goes to see Luo Fei and learn about Luo Fei’s extreme observation skills. He found the name of Ding Ke’s assistant during the Wen Hongbin case, but it’s the only one he found. The sniper who killed Hongbin and who is the most likely target of Eumenides has disappeared. Luo Fei thinks his name was an alias to protect his identity.

I started Varka SQ and I loved the beginning: lore impactful, but sounds intriguing with a good plot. And a lot of characters too! I’ll need to note down some names in Chinese to match with their equivalent in English.
I wanted to play all chapter 1 today, but I won’t have time. Anyway, I’m glad the story looks promising.
I was so sleepy today, but thankfully, chapter 5 was a suspenseful one!
第五章 地铁追踪 (contains spoilers)
The team and men chosen by Liu Song watch Liu Wei and Han Dongdong, waiting for them to meet Han Hao. Han Hao manages to get rid of all the men watching his wife and they meet for a brief time. Luo Fei and Liu Song almost caught him, but he managed to escape. even though his right foot is clearly injured.
快、准、狠。
I’m reading Lohen’s skill showcase and anecdote in Chinese, and there’s a passage where he says:
快、准、狠。我的技巧就是这样,不知道你跟不跟得上?
These three adjectives immediately brought me back to 流行蝴蝶剑, I think Gu Long liked to use them in combination to praise a martial art, I remember it because I found it so cool haha.
I found some examples:
够快、够准、够狠的暗器
他武功本和孟星魂是同一路的,又狠,又准,又快
One more reason to pull for Lohen then!
Also 火光炸开,冰晶封路—— So cool!
Lohen teaser is so good… I guess he’s kind of a must-pull now… my plan to save for Snezhnaya has been short-lived…
It would be funny if I get Lohen before Mika, he’s the only 4star I’m missing.

第四章 节外生枝 (contains spoilers)
Wu Yinwu is found dead, he jumped from the 7th floor of the hospital. Family said he looked depressed after the visit of a “policeman”. Luo Fei and Yin Jian understand that this can’t have been a real policeman.
A Hua informs Lin Henggan and Meng Fangliang of A Sheng’s death, mentioning the car must have been tempered with and the accident is actually murder. He shares his fear that Eumenides is the culprit and might be targeting the whole Group, hinting that Lin Henggan and Meng Fangliang are in danger.
The team concludes that the fake policeman can’t have been Eumenides, but his identity is still unknown. Yin Jian informs Luo Fei that someone contacted Han Hao’s wife, who then informed the school her son would not come to class this afternoon. They think they will try to meet with Han Hao.
I listened to 某印刷物的下落, it has a really interesting (but dark) topic!
I actually picked 죽은 집에 관한 기록 to have something short and easy to read on the side, while my main reading focus was supposed to be my Chinese novel 暗黑者2, but 죽은 집에 관한 기록 is so good, I ended up reading only that today…
I remember 불귀도 살인사건 being an extremely suspenseful thriller that I would definitely place among my 10 favourite books read in Korean. I should really explore 전건우‘s bibliography more!
I’m stopping here for now, because it would be a shame to finish it too soon, but wow, this book could really be read in one sitting. I’m halfway through and so far it’s one of the best horror story I’ve read/watched (including films and series) in a while.
This book is impossible to put down!!!
I finished the word quest! Chapter 2 and chapter 3 were so good, chapter 3 in particular was breathtaking, I just finished it in one-go. The end almost made me cry too.
In terms of story content, I used to love the AQ the most, then the SQ, and the WQ were a bit of a hit or miss to me. But this version, it’s the reverse: I’ve loved all the WQ (at least the ones I’ve done), to me they were better and more engaging than all the second half of the Archon Quest, even though they’re unvoiced.
This brought my total exploration over 60%! 200 primos more Now I’ll probably need to explore more on the surface first, and if it’s not enough to reach 80%, go back and try to find puzzles I haven’t done yet. And I know I said it already, but I love exploring with Nicole!
This book is so so good!! Extremely suspenseful, I love it so far!
Finished chapter 3, so suspenseful!!
I had a good time in the game today! Visited Columbina and Nicole. I really love her side quests, 胜过白银与精金! The first two chapters were great. I love listening to Nicole
I finished the mini games (the Yaoyao and Qiqi one was so cute), so now I completely finished the event. I also got the Dust from SO farming, so now I can go back to regular farming, which allowed me to finally complete (for now) Nicole’s build.
I didn’t have time to start something long like the Temple of Space WQ or Varka SQ as planned, but I’ll probably have time tomorrow.
第三章:Eumenides的身份 (contains spoilers)
Luo Fei reports to Director Song and sums up the 一三〇 case: Chen Jianqiao had borrowed money from Wen Hongbing who abducted him and threatened to explode a bomb if he didn’t give the money back. Jianqiao’s wife called the police who killed Hongbing. According to Luo Fei and Song, three things are strange: 1- the file is sloppy, especially the part about Hongbing’s execution. it’s strange that the file made it to the Archives as is. 2- Yuan Zhibang participated in the case although he was still a trainee police officer at the time and should not have been involved. 3- Xue Dalin was supervising the case, but at the time he was busy with the 三一六 case (the drug traffic case).
Luo Fei thinks that the best is to ask the one who wrote the report: Ding Ke, a former police officer who quit the police for illness in 1984 and never came back. He was considered a legend, and the police often consulted him after his retirement, even though it bothered him. He finally disappeared completely in 1992 to avoid being involved in more cases. Song said he’s going to look for the other officers who participated in this report at the time.
Zeng Rihua finds the identity of Eumenides; Wen Chengyu: born on January 30th 1978, his father Wen Hongbing was killed by the police on January 30th, 1984, and Chengyu disappeared from the orphanage on January 30th, 1987.
The team thinks Wen Chengyu stole the files to understand what happened to his father, what role Yuan Zhibang played at the time, and to take his revenge: not only against Chen Tianqiao, but against all the police officers who took part in the operation and signed their name on the files. Next goal is to find them.
I started it and read the first chapter, it’s so good!! It’s a documentary with some found footage elements. Reading it actually feels like watching a found footage film. I love it so far!

If she ever officially replaces C2R1 Xianyun in Xiao’s team, then she’ll be double-crowned, but… I’m in denial, I don’t want to accept the fact that she can replace Xianyun. I want to believe that this is just a dream, and we’re all going to wake up to Adepti buffs or sth, that will make Xianyun BIS again and Xiao completely broken…
3735 is probably not enough, but oh well… good enough for now!
I finished the first short story 血液を探せ!and this one was so funny. Not just humouristic elements that make you smile, but actually so funny I was laughing almost the entire time. And the end was so great too!
I chose my new Korean book: another short one (180 pages) by 전건우, the author of 불귀도 살인사건 which is one of my favourite Korean crime novels. Given that 暗黑者2 is my main focus at the moment, and that I’m going to be mostly reading it this month, I prefer having shorter books that are easy to read for the other two languages.
I actually wanted to choose a collection of short stories, but the book I had in mind was not available yet in e-book.
I’ll probably buy it tomorrow!
Setting the supporting cast for IT made me realise that the only hydro character available is Aino (I don’t have Kokomi), so three of my Geo characters won’t do anything unless I manage to keep Aino for them. This means I’ll have to pick my husband’s Kokomi for sure.
I’ve been thinking that Lunar characters will be very bad in IT versions where hydro is not featured. Some opponents do have hydro auras, but still…
I haven’t tried it yet, but I feel like it’s going to be quite difficult this time too! (the last two IT versions were a real challenge). Not complaining though, I love difficult combat!
I finished the 赝作古典 part! I guess chapter 1 (天堂) is ending soon now. This brought my total exploration to 59%, I’m making good progress.
Exploring the library was so much fun! I loved all the puzzles, and the building was fantastic. I took some time to explore after the WQ, and I think I must have done more or less everything now.
I love looking for chests with Nicole, she’s also so excited every time we open one
And it was a pleasant surprise to learn that Zeitlind is also a Xiao fan!!!!
But also: 他把璃月的《护法仙众夜叉》的出场角色全部翻转了个性别,改名叫《倾城夜叉传。》。What??!!?? HAHAHAHA.
Finally!!! It’s over!
There’s really a problem with the length of AQ Acts this version… Act X was the worst, dialogues dragged on forever, you could easily cut half of it. Maybe part of it was to build tension, to accentuate that feeling that everyone’s getting ready like it’s going to be a tough confrontation, and we might all disappear and so on… but as a player, you know everything’s going to be fine in the end, so I personally felt no tension at all, and all the build-up ended up being useless.
And it was so static too, most of it happens in the same place. No action at all, apart from the end.
I also wish that characters for which this act was really important, namely Colley and Wanderer, had more screen time. Like I can’t believe the act was 8 hours long, but they didn’t really go over Wanderer’s past. Like there were some quick pictures flashing at the end, but you can’t even call them flashbacks. Also they expected players to remember events from years ago and/or to have played limited events not available anymore.
At least it was a relief to be able to play it by chunks.
I finished chapter 2. This book is exactly like the first volume: fast paced, suspenseful and impossible to put down!
第二章:暗流翻涌 (contains spoilers)
At Longyu Group, it’s decided that vice-president Lin will take on responsibilities as Group president until Deng Hua’s son is old enough to succeed his father. A Hua is only interested in killing Eumenides.
Han Hao escapes the detention center under Yin Jian’s watch by using the metal wire and his knowledge of the building.
Mu Jianyun didn’t get useful information from the female student, but she and Luo Fei agree that the new Eumenides has a different MO from his master.
She thinks that Han Hao will stay in the city to take revenge upon Eumenides. She also thinks that he will try to see his family.
A man, probably Eumenides, prints documents from the Archives under with a stolen pass. Even though he printed 13 files, Luo Fei manages to find out the one that Eumenides really cared about: 一三〇恶性劫持人质案, a case that took place on January 30th, in 1984, two monts before the 四一八 explosion.
Han Hao goes in a bar, but a man who knows his identity finds him.
We learn about the new Eumenides past: On January 30th, 1984, on the day of his sixth birthday, his father disappear and a man came into his life, taking care of him and his mother. But soon after, this man also disappeared, his mother died, and he went to the orphanage. Eumenides then came to him and he became his disciple. As Yuan Zhibang’s picture is displayed on the news after the explosion, the new Eumenides realises that his “master” and the nice young man who took care of him after his father’s disappearance are the same person.
On January 30th, his father never came back after going out to buy a birthday cake, but two policemen, one of them Yuan Zhibang, came to him instead. He last saw his father talking to a stranger.
In a restaurant he likes going to, he sees A Sheng talking business with Lin Henggan and Meng Fangliang and understands that he must have betrayed his loyalty to Deng Hua to strike a deal with the new president of the group (he knows them from studying Longyu Group’s members to kill Deng Hua). Drunk, A Sheng talks badly to the blind musician that Eumenides enjoys listening to. He attacks A Sheng.
A man manages to fool a nurse at the hospital were Wu Yinwu is resting, and goes to his room.
A Sheng dies in a car accident staged by Eumenides.

第一章: 新队长上任 (contains spoilers)
Luo Fei is appointed leader of the 四一八专案组. Yuan Zhibang is dead, but his disciple is still out there and just executed two high school students who posted a video of them bullying their professor, which started a real outrage. Three teenagers were involved and each received the death notice, but the professor cut his own hand to exchange for the life of the female student. Mu Jianyun will take care of her while Yin Jian will interrogate the professor.
Yin Jian interrogates Han Hao without success and allows him to keep a pendant overlooking an iron wire hidden in it.
Luo Fei thinks that Zhibang’s disciple must have been a child between 7 and 13 when he met Zhibang, which was probably as soon as he left the hospital in 1985. The child must have been without connection nor family. Zeng Rihua is tasked with looking for orphan and missing children.
Although Deng Hua is dead, the team still fear that his men will go after Mu Jianyun, so Liu Song will go with her.
Writing the summary of 暗黑者1 reminded me how good this novel was. I can’t believe so much happened in one volume (the first one was not long at all iirc) and the plot is so good too!

暗黑者1: whole novel (contains spoilers)
This spoils the entirety of 暗黑者1, please don’t read if you haven’t read the book. It’s only intended to help me go back into the story with volume 2. Also, I wrote it from memory and based on notes I took at the time, there are a lot of details I don’t remember and many things might be inaccurate.
—
18 years ago, Luo Fei’s best friend Yuan Zhibang and his girlfriend Meng Yun both die in an explosion. A man who was also randomly present at the scene, Huang Shaoping, is severely injured and lives isolated.
In present day, a policeman is looking for the culprit of this old case. He is trying to trigger Huang Shaoping’s memory by showing him photographs of people using a website where a certain Eumenides invites users to give the name of criminals who escaped justice so that he can kill them. We also learn that Xue Dalin, from the Public Security Bureau, was killed by Eumenides, but I can’t remember when this was supposed to happen…
An investigative team is formed with Luo Fei, Zeng Rihua, a computer expert, psychologist Mu Jianyun, young policeman Yin Jian. They work under the supervision of captain Han Hao.
The policeman who was working on the old case is found dead by Luo Fei. Some pictures on his camera have been erased, but Zeng Rihua finds the name and address of the person whose pictures have been deleted. They find him attached to a fake bomb with a notice announcing the next victim.
The next victim is a woman accused of intentionally killing a man with her car. She received Eumenides death notice for a certain date. The police watches her closely that day, but she still gets killed. The team realises that Eumenides must have been in a hotel room near the site, they go there and find the preserved body parts of Eumenides victims with videos of their execution. One man is left alive, Peng Guangfu. He has killed one of Han Hao’s colleague in an old case and injured Han Hao. His complice was shot, but he himself got away. Eumenides has provided a way to find Guangfu.
Meanwhile, both Jianyun and Rihua have suspicions about Luo Fei. We finally learn that Luo Fei and Meng Yun are the creators of Eumenides at the police school, but it’s confirmed he his not the present Eumenides. For a while, they think that Meng Yun might be still alive and the instigators of the murders, but Luo Fei confirms her death (I remember this scene, it was so so weird).
The signal to find Peng Guangfu goes live, and Han Hao, Yin Jian, Xiong Yuan (captain of the SWAT team who joined the team), and Liu Song (who works under Xiong Yuan) go to the site. Xiong Yuan’s role is to make sure that Peng Guangfu is rescued and brought to the station. The group has to separate to deactivate a bomb, and both Xiong Yuan and Peng Guangfu are killed. The others get out alive but no one knows what really happened.
Huang Shaoping contacts Mu Jianyun and tells her to investigate a case of drug traffic from 18 years ago. She realises that Xue Dalin, the second victim of Eumenides, was in charge of the case at the time and got tremendous success thanks to his informant Deng Yulong. His secretary, Bai Feifei committed suicide (because of Guangfu, but I can’t remember why).
Jianyun wants to investigate and goes to Deng Yulong, now called Deng Hua, but she learns that he just received Eumenides’ death notice. The police knows it and wants to protect him, but Deng Hua relies on his own men, especially the reliable A Hua. When talking with Jianyun, Deng Hua is surprised that she knows about Bai Feifei, and comes to the conclusion that her source is either Huang Shaoping or Luo Fei. Talking with Luo Fei confirms that it’s not him, so he sends his men to Huang Shaoping’s place but they don’t find him.
In the meanwhile, Liu Song thinks that Yin Jian is the one who killed his superior, Xiong Yuan, because of traces of blood found in the car. Han Hao covers for Yin Jian by making the traces disappear, which only reinforces Liu Song’s suspicions.
Luo Fei understands that the man who came out of the explosion 18 years ago is not Huang Shaoping. He goes to his place but doesn’t find him. Luo Fei now knows that Huang Shaoping is in reality his friend, Yuan Zhibang. (I don’t remember how Luo Fei finds out, and I remember a trick with the bomb timing, but I completely forgot the details.)
Yuan Zhibang takes a restaurant owner hostage and says he has a bomb, He asks to talk to three persons:
First, he sees Jianyun and gives her a document she should open on her own. Then he sees A Hua and tells him that Bai Feifei was his friend. She recorded a conversation between Xue Dalin and Zheng Yulong proving that both men were doing illegal activities. Dalin got the recording back and killed Feifei (she didn’t commit suicide). Zhibang says that he has a copy of the recording and that he just gave it to Mu Jianyun. Doing this, he knows that Zheng Hua will try to kill Mu Jianyun (and will likely succeed), so in order to save Mu Jianyun, Luo Fei will certainly let Eumenides kill Zheng Hua first. Finally, he talks to Luo Fei. He tells him that after the murder of his friend Feifei, he decided to become Eumenides to kill Zheng Hua, which was his real ultimate goal, and do justice to Feifei. 18 years ago, he used Luo Fei and Meng Yun to disappear, but Meng Yun somehow saw through the plan (I don’t remember the details) and detonated the bomb sooner, leaving him injured.
We then learn that Han Hao is the one who killed his colleague at the time (again, I don’t remember the details, but maybe the two policemen were drunk when they chase Peng Guangfu and his friend, so Han Hao shot his colleague when he thought he was aiming at the two men he was chasing). Han Hao then executed Guangfu’ friend so that he doesn’t talk, did some shenanigans with the bullets and said that Guangfu was the one who shot his colleague. He has been considered a hero. His goal has always been to find Guangfu to kill him and prevent him to reveal the truth. Eumenides had found Guangfu before him and learnt the whole story. He gave a second chance to Han Hao: the chance to kill Guangfu before he is brought to the police station. That’s exactly what Han Hao did during the operation, but as Xiong Yuan was guarding Guangfu, Han Hao had to kill him too.
Yin Jian who was falsely accused, realises that the culprit must be Han Hao. Luo Fei arrives to the same conclusion when examining the shooting case and the bullets.
Eumenides tells Han Hao that he has filmed the whole scene of him killing both Xiong Yuan and Peng Guangfu. He blackmails him into helping him kill Deng Hua. Han Hao accepts with the intention of killing Eumenides instead.
Luo Fei decides to let Eumenides kill Deng Hua in order to protect Mu Jian. (I think, the copy of the recording never existing, but Luo Fei still thinks she’s in danger… maybe he thinks Deng Hua will try to kill her anyway just in case? I don’t remember). On the day of Deng Hua’s execution, Eumenides is in contact with his “complice” Han Hao. He reveals his position to Han Hao: he is disguised as one of Deng Hua’s men. Han Hao goes straight to him and kills him. We then realise that he just killed the real Deng Hua who was disguised as one of his men (while one of his men was posing as Deng Hua, probably with something to hide his face, I can’t remember). That was a trick he always used when he knew he was targeted. Han Hao is arrested.

I feel like I played for hours, but it’s still going on… and it also doesn’t feel like it will end soon. There are a lot of useless and repetitive dialogues in my opinion… Act X is much much too long.
I really don’t understand why they feel the need to make it so long… Oh well, I’ll probably won’t be able to finish it this weekend, but if I play a little bit everyday next week, I will get there eventually.
So far, by far the best thing in the AQ is the music, and there are some scenes I really loved too like that art of Jeht dragging us out of danger, Faruzan and Nicole’s dialogue, the Aranara following us, Paimon and Wanderer’s private discussion (I almost cried when they talked about that feeling of being useless), Mavuika casually throwing her gnosis to us… but these are really small sparkles in a sea of complete boredom.

I regret waiting so long before starting volume 2, it starts right where the first volume finished, and there’s no real recap.
This being said, I start remembering things better now, I’ll need to re-read my notes and really try to remember who is who and what happened. So I’m stopping here for now, and come back once I refreshed my memory.
我们和Eumenides的战斗,也许现在才算是真正开始。

This list is made from memory and some notes I took when reading the first book, there might be mistakes.
I found and re-read my notes about 暗黑者1, and they don’t make any sense
It’s fine I guess if you just finished the book and still know the story and characters well, but for someone who was hoping to remember the story through the notes, it doesn’t help.
My past self is quite disappointing haha.
I started Act X, and I really don’t like this AQ. I think it’s the first time since playing that I really don’t like a content in the game. There are things I liked less, like some Fontaine WQ that felt much too verbose to me. And yeah, I did found the last Nod-Krai AQ acts much much too long to the point where they burnt me out, but I wasn’t bored exactly.
I’m not saying that it’s uninteresting, but the way it’s delivered is very monotonous. It also feels verbose for the sake of it, like they absolutely want to make the AQ 8 hours long.
I’ve played for a long time, but it seems unending… at least we can take breaks.

I listened to 無線電對講機, this one was very short. I was surprised to see an adult protagonist, most of the other main characters are all teenagers or children, at least in the short stories I’ve read by this author so far. I liked this one a lot! The voice acting is so good too, it’s really a shame that I could not find the name of the narrator… So annoying.
I’ve been extremely efficient in Genshin today! I can’t believe I completed everything I had planned: I finished the event, did the Liyue part of the Temple of Space WQ, did Durin’s Witch’s Homework and completed a run of IT. I only got 6 flowers, the worst I ever did… I usually get full flowers on the highest mode, except for last time and this time. To be fair, I haven’t tried hard, maybe I’ll do another run this weekend to try and get at least the next elixir. But for now I just wanted to complete a run to get the primogems so I don’t need to stress about it.
I also used all my condensed resin in SO to farm the new artifacts and I got a full set for Nicole. It’s far from being perfect, she only has 3500 Atk right now… I don’t know how much she needs, but it’s probably not enough. Oh well, I’m happy she has the set now!
The only thing is that I can’t find the motivation to continue the AQ.
I finished the Liyue part of the WQ, 生命万岁, it was really great! I loved the painting puzzles, they were very inventive and beautiful. Dialogues were easier too compared to Sumeru. Overall, I preferred the Liyue part over the Sumeru one, both for the landscape and the puzzles.
And with this, I finally reached 40% on the two regions combined, so 100 primogems acquired!
I still haven’t explored the newly unlocked Pavillon of Paintings, so I’ll do that next.
I finished the event, it was so sweet! It might just be one of my favourite events I played in the game. It even had me tearing up in the last chapter
Readmoo reading challenge update
I reached the five books mark on the Readmoo Reading Challenge and got my first badge!!
As someone who started reading in Chinese not long ago, participating in an online reading challenge and getting to the first badge feels like a huge achievement! It goes up to 15 books, but I’m pretty certain now that I won’t make it. It’s fine though, because my goal has always been to try and go for the 10 books mark.
I read the five books listed in the “Normal” category, which are books of medium length (between 100,000 and 130,000 characters), so now I only have the long and short books to choose from. Given that we’re nearing the middle of the year already, I think that reading 5 more books will be possible, but it also depends on what other books I read in Chinese. I already decided to go for 暗黑者 as my next read, and this one is a very long one! And if I decide to start a Gu Long novel before the end of the year (which I probably will do), then it will certainly take one entire month if not more to finish.
The books of the challenge I read so far have all been excellent. Two authors I already knew, and three were new to me, so this allowed me to discover more authors and add more books to my wish list. So even if I were to stop now, it would still be a great experience.
Next read in Chinese: 暗黑者2
I chose my next book in Chinese: I’m finally going to continue the 暗黑者 series by Zhou Haohui.
The problem is that I read the first volume in January, and I don’t remember the story well… I really hope there’s some kind of recap in the second volume (I guess there probably is), but if not, I can find my notes (they must be in a notebook somewhere).
This second volume, 宿命, is very long: 429,000 characters… that’s three times the length of most Taiwanese novels I’ve been reading lately. Thankfully, it should be easy to read (at least the first volume was!), and it’s in Simplified Chinese, so my reading pace is faster too.
And no need to buy anything because I’m going to read it on 微信读书.
Bought my next Japanese book
I bought Zoo2 by Otsuichi on Booklive. Of all the things I had to do today, this should have been the fastest, but it took me ages to pay. I had to renew my payment method, and nothing worked, and it took me like 30 minutes to add my card and buy my book. So frustrating to lose time with this kind of things…
매일 죽어야 하는 X was a very entertaining and easy to read short novel! It’s a time loop novel and the protagonist, Donghyeon, is suffering from amnesia, so the goal is not only to know why the time loop happens, but also to understand why our main character is where he is: a juvenile detention center.
This setting makes the story even more interesting and opens the door for ambiguous feelings towards Donghyeon. There are also some reflexions about the possibility of redemption, but mostly the novel is just a fast-paced and suspenseful thriller.
I really loved the end too.
Finished! Last chapter was great, I was afraid at some point that the story would take a turn I personally would have found disappointing, but it didn’t in the end, and I liked the conclusion very much.
Finished 5, it was very short!
This book reads very easily
I played through chapter 2, it was so so cute and so so funny!!! I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard in a Genshin story. The whole party is just adorable I constantly had a big smile on my face while playing the story.
So far, I’m 100% loving the event story more than the AQ.
After playing chapter 2, I’m even more annoyed at the weapon skin. If it had to be a skin (and not a real weapon), and if it had to be recycled design, they could have at least made a version per weapon type so that all the “Little Witches” could equip it as a souvenir of their adventure…
Finished chapter 4!
Time loop novels can easily become repetitive, but this one is fast pace and each day feels different. I like that our protagonist is trying everything to understand the situation and change his fate.
However, the story might take a direction I won’t like as much… we’ll see!
It’s the first book I read by this author, and I really loved it. However, there are one or two things that prevent me from listing it among my favourite books.
The plot is very intriguing, especially the beginning that sounds like SF almost, and I must say that the story stays engaging until the end. However, I do think that the setting was a bit long. You can argue that this is inevitable given that there are a lot of things to settle before deductions and investigation can really start, but that’s my point: I think that there might be too many mysteries happening at once, and some only get addressed later in the novel.
Second point is the end, it was good for sure, but I’m kind of skeptic still. Too many variables, too complicated, overall simply the same thing as my first point: too many elements.
But I value the entertaining aspect of genre fiction very high, and this novel was really suspenseful and engrossing, especially the second part.
Finished the last chapter!! As expected, it was impossible to put down, and I read the whole chapter in one-go.
However, I must say that the end did not entirely convinced me… everything sounds so complicated…
Daily reading goals
Plan for today
- Finish 錯置體. I basically only have the “solution” chapter left, where everything will be revealed, so I’m probably going to read it in one sitting!
- Just one chapter of 매일 죽어야하는 X. I’m not sure if I’ll have time for it, but I saw that the next chapters are rather short and the book is very easy to read.
I probably won’t be playing much Reverse this new patch… I might even skip the story and character stories, we’ll see… There are so many things to do in Genshin right now, I don’t have time for two games, and R1999 has always been a side game. I also really want to go back to Where Winds Meet, so given that I’m not hyped at all for the this patch (not specially looking forward to the story, it’s also not a main story I think, and I’m skipping both characters anyway), it’s a good time to take a break.

Cheng Heguang story
I finished Cheng Heguang’s story, it really was a last minute thing, but I haven’t played Reverse much lately.
I loved his story very much, I usually love Reverse character stories and anecdotes, but I find that they’ve become more contemplative lately? I like introspection, but rather than having the character recall the past in a contemplative way, I prefer just having an episode of the past as story. That’s exactly what Cheng Heguang’s story was, and I love it. It has a good plot, we learn about key moments of his past, learn about his character and personality… A story that has an engaging plot and allows us to know and understand the character better… that’s the best in my opinion.
I was so tired of the AQ, I decided to start the event story to distract myself, and yeah, it worked! I only played until the mini-games presentations (I’m so happy these were voiced), but I liked the beginning, it was very funny and cute, and it’s nice to get to know Prune!
Yeah I guess that rather than discussing Sumeru lore with grown-ups, I prefer to play with children and their imaginary friends…
And also, I love Qiqi
I only played one game of each, I love the Yaoyao/Qiqi one and the Sayu one too! Combat was good too, much better than what we had last time (I’m not super fan of the “interrupt combat to use a mechanic” type of game). As for Klee’s… I guess I just still haven’t gotten the hang of it…
I’m very happy with my reading progress today! Finished a chapter in my Taiwanese novel, read one chapter in my Korean novel (these were my goals for the day!), and also listened to a whole short story in my audiobook!
I finally finished act 9!
First of all, I must say that it’s really cool to open the game and think “I will play the AQ for 20 minutes”.
But then… the first half of Act IX was really good, but the second half was just people standing in circle discussing lore? I’m personally not a fan of this kind of AQ, and unfortunately we had a lot of it in Nod-Krai, especially towards the end. I don’t find listening to endless discussions very engaging for a video game, I would prefer more action, having things to do, feeling more involved.
And then, Sumeru lore is quite difficult too. At first, I wanted to read the wiki to fill the gaps (either things I don’t understand in Chinese or things I forgot), but then it was just too much so I gave up.
So yeah, I personally haven’t been a fan of the end of Act IX… I hope Act X will pick up the pace.
I listened to 殺死瑪麗蘇, this one was a bit more difficult than the previous ones, especially at the beginning, but it was okay still. I enjoyed it, it’s about fiction and real life, and I guess what writing means for the protagonist, though said like that it doesn’t do justice to the short story. I really loved the end, and overall, I like the direction the story took, I like that writing is not idealised as something sacred or whatever. It kinds of serves a purpose, but this purpose can change.
Not my favourite story of the collection, but I enjoyed it!
Finished chapter 3! The story is really great, I love it.
I’m also glad that I completed my reading goals for today
I finished chapter 4! It was such a great chapter. The book introduces a lot of things in the first half, several cases linked together, a lot of characters and episodes that seem impossible. I thought that the novel was going in too many directions at the same time, but chapter 4 ties everything together.
Only one chapter left!

Today’s reading goals
Reading goal for today:
- Finish chapter 4 of 錯置體
- Read chapter 3 of 매일 죽어야하는 X
Character names that were just mentioned once in chapter 2 are coming back in chapter 4. I’m glad I made a character list!
I always do that because I tend to forget foreign names more easily (I never do character list for novels I read in English or French), and because it’s useful for the reading in the case of Chinese (when I don’t know a character) and mostly Japanese.
Korean names are also tricky, I tend to mix them up easily if two characters have names that sound even remotely similar. I really have a hard time remembering names in Korean to be honest, if only I can see the hanja, then I remember the name immediately, but most of the time, you don’t see them. Like for example, names like 천현숙 and 전형수, I know they’re not the same at all, but I’m going to mix them up for sure if I don’t write them down somewhere.
Finally, given that I’m always reading several books at the same time, I sometimes stay several day without opening a book if I’m engrossed in another one, so it’s easier to forget who is who.
Today, I’m going to work on the design of vocabulary exercises I have on my private website. My flashcards are one direction only, because I’m mostly interesting in reading, not talking nor writing, so it shows me the Chinese word, and I need to tell the pronunciation and meaning.
But I have some exercises to work on vocabulary differently, like close fill in, listening exercises, meaning to Chinese direction etc. I will polish these a little bit, and make daily sessions of 10 exercises per type. They’re not things I need to do every day like the flashcards, but having small packages of 10 exercises per day will feel more motivating than having an endless flow of drills like I have right now.
I’m also working on a view that would display character readings and example words in all three languages. That has always been a dream of mine, but I never managed to make it come true with Anki, to much work just to create the cards…
Chapter 4 is really really great, one of the best things I’ve read recently!

Chapter 4 is so so good!
All along I had the feeling that Lao Qin must have been introduced in a previous work, and I now have confirmation, because there’s a passage that refers to a previous case involving this character, and the footnote says it’s in 關於高雄的殺意與哀愁.
It really feels like the reader is supposed to know Lao Qin (this being said, if you don’t like me, it doesn’t affect the novel at all), now it makes sense!
I’m adding 關於高雄的殺意與哀愁 to my list then, I’ll probably read it at some point because I really love Lao Qin, and I’m pretty sure now that 錯置體 will just continue hitting at things that happened in the past, but the novel probably won’t explain them (I imagined everything is in 關於高雄的殺意與哀愁).

I finished chapter 2!
I really love time loop
I think I will be able to finish 매일 죽어야 하는 X this week, so my reading count will be 4 in May! I don’t know for 錯置體… I think it’s possible, but I’m reading this book much slower. Every time I’m reading it I feel like I made a lot of progress, but I actually only read like 5 or 6% more, I don’t think the book is particularly long, because it belongs to the middle section of the Readmoo challenge (books of average length). I’m probably just reading it slower because it’s Traditional Chinese.
And I still haven’t started Zoo2, but I will at some point during the week.
I finished the Sumeru part of the Temple of Space WQ: 「沙上楼阁」稗记 and did some progress on the exploration of this part of the map.
To be honest, the dialogues are quite difficult. First, WQ are always more difficult because they’re not voiced, and sometimes I just don’t understand the tone or humour(?) of some sentences. And I get tired more easily when it’s unvoiced content. But this part in particular was difficult because it contains a bit of lore, and it would have been difficult to follow in English too I’m sure. I also have a hard time remembering names like 维特鲁威 or 维尼皮.
So I think I still have two objects to find, so two more parts of this length probably, and this is still chapter 1. I do enjoy the quest, but I prefer regions with several shorter quests rather than one long quest with several chapters.
I have so many things to do in Genshin, I made a detailed to-do list, but every time I open the game all I do is play the rhythm game…

Finished the first chapter!
Not the setting is done, things can really get started!
I finished 宗像與鋼筆事件, I loved it so much!
It wasn’t as different as I thought it would be (given that it was written under another pen name). It’s about class bullying and discrimination, standing for someone else, friendship and fighting for justice. It also contains a very good mystery. Overall it was suspenseful, had relatable characters and meaningful topics, I really loved it!
Beginning is very good! Main character is very likeable, and the novel makes you want to know what will happen to him.
But even more interesting is the setting: a school giving a second chance to young offenders. This leads to discussions about rehabilitation and whether they can change or not through this kind of system. I like this kind of topics!
The book is very easy to read too!

Goal for today is to start my new Korean novel and maybe make some progress on 錯置體, but I might just focus on the Korean book.
Next Korean novel: Hakwon time loop crime novel!
I chose my next Korean novel, finally!
It’s 매일 죽어야 하는 X by 정명섭. It’s a “학원 범죄 타밉루프”, and I can’t resist a time loop novel. I haven’t read a lot, but I really love the time loop mechanic.
I also already read a zombie time loop novel by this author, 재생, and enjoyed reading it very much, so I’m confident I will love this one too. This author is not difficult to read in terms of Korean level (I already read two or three novels and several short stories) and this one is very short too, so it’s exactly what I was looking for!
I did some exploration in the new region. It’s beautiful and I love the music!
The problem is that some regions give me nausea very fast when exploring, so I can’t actively look for puzzles and chests for a long time in a row. It doesn’t happen on “normal” land terrain like all the Nod-Krai islands, but the Temple of Space is one of the worst regions to explore to me in this regard. Maybe because you have to move the camera up and down a lot. I’m not sure what causes it. The absolute worst was underwater exploration, so I have whole parts of the map in Fontaine almost left untouched.
But, I’m motivated to get those exploration primogems, to make up for the disastrous Nicole pulls. I’m at 44% exploration on 风息山, which is very strange because I haven’t done anything on the map it feels like. So it’s a total of 24%. Still pretty much at the beginning, but I can do a little bit everyday. And Nicole is helping with the treasures
I found this movie extremely good, it was very entertaining, fast paced, and with great actors. The plot is pretty much what you would expect in a zombie film, but it was very well executed. I personally really like the unified thinking aspect of the infection, it brought something new and made the situations more interesting.
There are some memorable scenes, and the film stays suspenseful until the end. I often find that horror films tend to lose their impact when we near the climax and the resolution, but not 군체.
I personally much much preferred this one over Train to Busan (same director). I saw it when it came out, so it’s been a while, but I remember not really liking it, despite overall liking the zombie genre. Too much sentimentalism, too many emotional scenes, and I personally don’t really like children in horror films because you know nothing bad is going to happen to them anyway, so it’s not very suspenseful imo.
There’s no teary emotional scenes in 군체, so to me this is a huge plus, characters were not here for you to like them, but they followed their goal, so all their actions made sense from their perspective.
Seeing the movie in theatres probably made it more impactful, but it’s one of my favourite films of the year so far.
Chapter 4 is a nice change of pace, I love Xiao Li’s style. Now the novel is both engrossing and funny too!

Next Japanese book
For my next Japanese book, I’m going to finish the ZOO collection by reading the second volume.
Looking at the books I read in Japanese this year, I realise that I didn’t not like most of them. ZOO1 is by far my favourite, followed by Exit 8. But then, there’s a huge gap. 方舟 and ネタバレあり were also great, but they still belong to a genre I’m a bit tired of reading in Japanese: closed circle. It’s a genre I absolutely love, because I find it fascinating to see how people will react when trapped in this kind of situation, and how their true personality reveals itself as they are put under stress. But Japanese novels I read with this mechanic are more focused on the tricks than the characters. 方舟 and ネタバレあり were both excellent though.
And then there’s the other 8 novels, none of them has made it to my list of favourite. I do think some of them were very good, I just didn’t enjoy reading them as much.
I really liked ネタバレあり! I did find some parts in the first half a bit long, but it all pays off in the end. It’s the kind of novel where everything makes sense and everything had its purpose.
To be honest, I have been tired of contemporary Japanese honkaku mysteries lately. I find that they tend to be too meta, too clever, too focused on tricks and how to deceive the reader, and not enough on the characters and the actual plot. The novel itself sometimes becomes a part of the plot, you have mandatory characters like the detective and the author of detective novels, and characters will discuss detective fiction, but in the end, it’s always the same things again and again.
This novel is also no exception, but it’s really well executed, and it renewed my love for the genre. Characters are well written and their personality and motivation are not sacrificed to the tricks. The way the novel is integrated in the story is very well done and doesn’t feel artificial at all. The solution was also very good, and the end really engrossing.
Finished!!
I can’t believe I finished it today!! I devoured the second half!
At some point, there is a shift in the novel, and I thought I would stop there, but I got curious and started the next part. It was so engrossing, I just continued reading until I finished it! The end was truly excellent.
I haven’t been able to read for long periods of time lately, I get tired after 10 or 20 pages, so I’m very happy with my progress today! To be fair, Japanese is the easiest language to me, and this book is also easy to read.
On the one hand, Nicole-Durin is an increase over FFXX for Xiao, on the other hand, it means building more ER. With C2 Xianyun, I can run Xiao with 0 ER no problem, he consistently cleared one stage of SO Fearless without ER (though not recently as there’s too much shill). Right now I have 110 ER because it’s more comfortable and allows for mishaps in rotations, but I don’t want to build more. Also, I do have C2R1 Xianyun… so it hurts putting her aside (I’m not sure, but I do think Faruzan C6 on Favonius is still better?). If only Xianyun would buff all his plunges instead of only 8 ST.
So of course, I did pull Durin and Nicole to have the team available, but I don’t know how much I’m ready to invest into this team.
Oh well, it’s going to take a while anyway, I still haven’t done the Witches’ Homework, and I haven’t farmed the new artifact set for Nicole at all yet.
But building like 130-150 ER on Xiao? I don’t really want to…
They added die Mittsommernacht-Fantasie to the rhythm game!!!
I’m so happy!! I thought this one would never make it to the rhythm game because it was a limited track, but they did add it!!
I must say that overall, this album is really not a collection of my favourite tracks… Can’t complain though!
Chinese title for this song is 仲夏夜绮思.
I studied Nicole’s kit in Chinese. Hexerei characters are called 魔导 módǎo, that’s good to know!
I still can’t believe she can replace my C2R1 Xianyun in Xiao’s team…
I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish 4 books in May…
4 books per month is not really a hard goal, but it’s the number of books I usually can read, so it’s a good measure to see if a month has been a good or a bad reading month.
I am waking up at 4am almost every morning, and I’m so tired during the day, I feel like I’m making no progress at all on my two current novels, even though I love them both.
And I still haven’t started a Korean one. I’m still not sure which book I’ll pick, I really want to choose one that will be easy to read and not too long, but it’s hard to know in advance, though there is a handful of authors I know aren’t too difficult to read on my digital TBR.
I did some exploration with Nicole in Nod-Krai.
I found the Locale Legend 海捷德, and was able to beat her with my exploration team, without UI, so I’m kind of proud of myself for that. But I still need two achievements to get all the rewards, so I’ll have to go back there another day, with a freeze team this time. There are still several Local Legends I haven’t discovered yet.
I also realised that I only collected two of the five relics of Reed Miller! The ones I have are the goblet 织识者的倾醉 and the circlet 谋识者的面影.
There are so many things to do
有时候我也听不懂你和别人在聊些什么,我就把理解不了的内容先记下来,回去再慢慢研究。
— Paimon
I listened to 宗像與鋼筆事件 today, and I’m about halfway through now. I love this short story so so much. So far, I love it as much as the previous one 山羊座的友人.
Also, it’s funny because now I find the audiobook very easy to follow, so I’m glad I gave this audiobook another try (the first time I tried to listen to it I found it very hard and almost gave up).
Using Nicole’s ability
I love Nicole’s ability to show the direction of treasure chests, but I don’t like that they are pinned on the mini map too, which makes Nicole’s ability feel a bit useless, because you might as well look at the mini map to have a more precise indication.
I don’t like using the compass and just go from chest to chest, I prefer to look for them myself. But I really love Nicole’s ability because it’s a good trade-off: it shows the direction, but not the exact spot. I really wish there was a way to remove the chest pins from the mini map, but I couldn’t find any. So I decided to remove the UI altogether, and I love it!!! I find it so fun! I never tried before, but I love the experience.
I do wish they let us customise it, like for example keeping HP bar and stamina bar… And I also wish we could toggle it on and off more easily that going in the menu every time I log in.
But anyway, it makes exploration even more fun!
I continued the AQ a little bit, and I know I said it already, but I’m so so happy that they’re now allowing us to leave more often
I swear Nod-Krai AQ has completely burned me out, and I haven’t played as much the last patches because of it. I can’t play for hours at a time, I usually just spend 20 or 30 minutes in the game then do something else. I can spend 1 hour for some story content, doing IT or playing TCG, but 4-5 hours in a row was exhausting.
And I really love the story so far
As for Chinese level, I think that now I’m confortable following any Genshin story in Chinese, but I must admit that Sumeru lore is still hard to me. The reason is that I was still playing in English when doing all the Sumeru AQ and the WQ, so I don’t know the terms in Chinese, but most of the time it was easy to deduce from the context.
For example, I had no idea that the Akasha system is called 虚空. Thankfully the way it was talked about in the story made it obvious characters were talking about the Akasha system, but I was surprised by the Chinese name.
And I find Paimon’s notes quite useful!
The only compass I had was the Nod-Krai one. I crafted the others except for Fontaine and Liyue because I’m lacking materials. I have a lot of exploration left basically everywhere on the map, so it will be nice to look for treasures with Nicole.
I started the AQ, what a start!! The beginning is so good!
And it looks like they really did allow us to quit when we want to! I’m just at the beginning, so I hope it’s not going to change, but so far, there were a lot of “breaks” where it was possible to leave the AQ. I will try to progress a little bit, maybe not every day, but several times a week if I can. So I can finish during the patch without burn out.
Also the title… 身土坏空,五蕴识转. I know all the characters, I have no idea what it means.
Made some progress today. It’s funny that there’s a storm in the novel, and we have heavy rain here irl.
I finished chapter 3 and I’m halfway through!
There was a passage that contained medical explanations, I did not understand everything that was said, but enough to follow, so it’s fine.
… At double pity… It was a complete disaster… double pity, lost to Dehya and only got Prune C1… Nicole, why??
I love her, her animations are so beautiful! Given that I haven’t pre-farm, building her will take some time, but she will mainly go in Xiao, Kinich and Lyney’s team I think, and I might also try melt Ganyu, though this would mean redo her build.
Also, I’m someone who never explores with the compass (except for the limited Summer maps), but now that I have Nicole, I feel like using it.
I only got C1 Prune despite going double pity on Nicole’s banner. I’m glad to have her, though I don’t know if I’m really going to build and play her. because I have no idea which teams she would fit in. I’m going to build Nicole first in any case.
I started the third story, 宗像與鋼筆事件, and I absolutely love the beginning. It’s written under the pen name 中田永一, and I believe it’s the pen name the author used mostly for romance? (I’m not entirely sure). I thought the story would differ completely and be an entirely different style, but so far it feels similar to the previous one, 山羊座的友人, with a similar setting and topic (school bullying).
Chapter 3 is so great!! I wish I could read more today, but I don’t have time and I’m super tired.
And, I was able to change the font again! I don’t why it didn’t work last time, but this time it let me change the font for the main text, not just the letters and other stuff that have a different font.
I hate fonts that have horizontal strokes lighter and thinner than vertical strokes, especially if it’s so thin it’s barely visible. And minus point if they have serif (or the equivalent of serif).
But now I could choose the 華康青花黑體 font, same weight for all strokes, super uniform, nice thick black strokes without those decorative little triangles at the end of horizontal strokes. Simple and easy to read, I love it, it’s perfect!
I might have added too many words today… It’s so easy to add words with my new system compared to Anki, but I don’t have a cap of new words per day, maybe I should add that… At the same time, it’s so easy to review words now, and I see them multiple times in different contexts, so flashcards are much easier to go through. But 30 new words today already is a lot.
Though to be fair, they are not all strictly speaking new words, some are words I don’t know that well and I’m afraid I might forget them if I don’t add them to my flashcards (so for example, words that were in Anki but for which I often hit “again” or “hard”.)
,,, I’m not sure I loved Nicole’s demo trailer all that much…
Still looking forward to tomorrow I’ll just pull one copy, no weapon. I recently decided to not pre-farm for new characters because I find it fun to build them slowly, actually farm their materials with them and see the performance increase. So nothing is ready for her, I don’t even know what materials she needs
I’m looking forward to exploring with Nicole, I still need to unlock the compasses of the new regions though (I think her ability only works if we already have the compass?)

Finally fully built… I also bought his weapon. I don’t care if other support weapons are better, I always give characters their signature. I still don’t know how to play him exactly, I really need to re-read his kit or watch some videos.
Qin, from the prologue was also a roommate from medical school, and now the beginning of chapter 3 mentions two other roommates, so they were at least 4. I thought it was a lot already, but now the narrator mentions they actually were 6 in a room.. that’s a lot!

I finished 山羊座的友人, this short story was absolutely fantastic. The author has such a talent to make us care deeply for the characters.
But this story really amazed me, because I thought it would mostly be focused on characters, but it turns into a real mystery where clues lead to deductions which then lead to an unexpected ending. It’s really an amazing short story!
Only a few pages today, I’m really sleepy and tired. And the weather is so hot already, I can’t stand it anymore and it’s just May…
The passage I read also described characters enduring Southern Taiwan’s hot weather, so I could easily relate.
The story took an unexpected turn to say the least!

I finished working on Corvus’ voicelines. I’ll do Rubuska next. I’m working my way in reverse given that the audio of the recent characters is not available on the wiki yet. I don’t know exactly when they will be, maybe when the character becomes standard? I only do characters I have.
I guess I should also study Corvus’ kit… R1999 character kits are such a pain to read and fully understand.

So does this mean that both my C3R1 Mizuki and my triple-crowned Qiqi will get a buff?? Two of my favourite characters!! This is absolutely fantastic
And I’ll choose Mizuki with the next selector, so she’ll be C4 soon!
This reminds me that I should finally do Durin’s Witches’ Homework! At least before Nicole’s release. It’s crazy to think I still haven’t done any, but I only really played Durin in Xiao’s team, and to be honest, I was kind of burnt out at the time with the AQ, and his SQ was quite long too…
I finished the prologue! I like the story and the region, though the puzzles have been very easy so far (can’t really call them puzzles yet, more like a mechanism). I also unlocked the 摹に中枢. I have no idea how it’s called in English.
I feel really back into the game now. I never stopped playing, but the Nod-Krai AQ has burnt me out a little because it was too long and I hated being forced to play for several hours without breaks. So I almost didn’t touch the permanent content of the last patches, just doing dailies and events.
I’m glad I kept 山中好长日 for a moment when I’m more eager to play. Especially this one which looks heavy in lore.
I finished Emilie SQ! I loved it, it was my favourite genre, and yeah the end was foreseeable, but I enjoyed it still. It’s the kind of story with a lot of recurring vocabulary, so even if the beginning had a lot of unknown words to me, I found the second and third parts to be much easier to follow.
I’m also glad that I finished before the next patch given that we’ll have a new AQ.
Now I need to add new words from the end of part 2 and the whole of part 3 to my flashcards!
I finished the second section, and I guess we met all the characters now!
I finished adding all the new words to my flashcards from the part I already played through, which means I can now continue the story! I must say, the genre of the story is right up my alley!
I had some time to listen today! Only three chapters left for 山羊座的友人. The story is really really good.
I made some progress today, I’m still at the beginning, but I really really love it so far
Finally made it to the Temple of Space!
I finally started the main World Quest 山中好长日, and I thought I made a lot of progress, but I’m still in the chapter called 魔山 which is the Prologue… So I’m really just at the beginning… I also finally unlocked the new region, 空之神殿, but I stopped when I could unlock the TP, so I haven’t explored yet.
There’s something that I find very strange though… I’m the only one who finds what’s happening extraordinary! Everything, every step, every place is just mind blowing and we should all be “What??!!?”, but I’m the only one feeling that way and Lumine and Paimon are just “okay, let’s go”? I feel such a disconnect with the MC in this quest.
I’ll continue the quest and explore the region very slowly, but I’m glad I started.
One good thing is that the language level is very easy. No problem to understand so far (I mean, there are difficult things like a NPC dropping a lot of names in a short dialogue, but it’s not language related)! It’s a relief, I hope it stays like that. (I remember the Little One WQ being very hard at times, but I guess my Chinese level has improved a lot since then.)
My current Japanese and Taiwanese novels are so good… I still have to choose my next Korean book, and I feel like the other two are putting a lot of pressure on it haha.
I just read the first part, and this novel really feels different! Not just because it starts with a list of spoilers, but because of the way it’s written. I really love it. The opening scene of the novel is such a classic one, I’ve read so many openings like this one, but it also feels very different too, and even though the book has just begun, I feel like I’m already in the middle of the mystery. It’s very intriguing.
Not only that, but the writing is great too, just a few pages, and I already feel like I know the characters well, I really liked how they were introduced.
I wish I wasn’t so tired, but I don’t think I can get more reading done today…
Anyway, I’m very glad I chose this book, the beginning is very promising!

Starting ネタバレあり!
I’m starting ネタバレあり today
It’s the first time I’m reading Atsushi Shimomura, but if I like this one, I’ll read other books by this author.
I finished chapter 2! So good!!
The novel is suspenseful and has a very intriguing plot! =D
Something that is confusing with my e-reader is that I have two buttons (up and down) but they’re used differently depending on the app:
- Korean books are horizontal and use the bottom button to turn to the next page.
- Japanese books are vertical and use the top button.
- Taiwanese books are vertical and use the bottom button?
Some Taiwanese books are also horizontal, and I can change the layout anyway, so maybe that’s why?
I like that moment when you finished a book and need to choose a new one: so many possibilities!
I already chose my next Japanese novel, though I still haven’t started it yet, but I don’t know what my next Korean book will be! I have a wish list on the Kyobo app, I’ll probably choose one that is not too long.
I listened to 山羊座的友人 for about 30 minutes today, I think I’m almost halfway through. Somehow, the story has become very easy to follow now, I don’t have any problem understanding it, and I really really love this story. This one feels closer to the short stories from Zoo 1.
I really wanted to love this book, and I did at the beginning, but the more I read, the more I realised it was a “not for me” type of book. I think the book is great, but there are mainly two things that bothered me (not flaws of the book, just things that I personally don’t like). I know it’s not really a hardcore mystery novel, it has a lot more dimension than just the mystery parts, and it’s more focused on characters than the plot. But it does have a mystery flavour too, and I did not really like how episodes of the past are just revealed to the reader when the time has come to reveal them to us.
The most annoying thing to me is something that is very present in Korean fiction in my opinion: there’s an excess of out-of-the-ordinary characters. I don’t know how to describe it, but characters can never be boring, ordinary people to whom something happens. They all have either a traumatic past and extreme experiences, or have neurodivergent traits and personality disorders of some sorts (some recurring traits are not being able to have emotions or lacking empathy). The problem is that it’s not necessarily thematised, it’s more like a fictional trope.
But in this book in particular, though we do have a character lacking empathy, what bothered me is that all the main characters have a really heavy past and went through really traumatic experiences. The problem is that it’s true for all the main characters, so it kinds of loses its impact (at least that was my reading experience), and the novel wasn’t long enough to really spend a lot of time with each of them, when it feels like each of them would have necessitated a whole novel just for themselves.
Maybe for this reason, I never felt close nor really interested in any of the characters. It might just be that I spent too much time reading this book over a period of time that was too long, but as much as I loved the story, the characters left me mostly unmoved.
Finally finished it today! I’ve been reading it for more than a month, and unfortunately, I was reading it during a long reading slump, so I’m really glad I finished it now.
I don’t have the courage to start the new Japanese book today… Maybe tomorrow then!
I read a whole passage with the floor plans, and it was not difficult at all! I must have been very tired yesterday when I tried to tackle it, because today it felt very easy with the detailed maps. I can take screenshots with my e-reader, so I transferred the images to my phone. That way I could read and check the maps at the same time without needing to go back in the book, which I always find annoying to do with e-reader.
I wanted to finish the chapter today, but I start feeling tired again, so I’ll stop here for now. I’m waking up at 5 every morning right now and I can’t really go to bed early, so my attention span for books is very short.
I must say the novel is really really good, such an intriguing mystery! The passage I read was really engrossing.
アジア本格リーグ
I looked at the 6 books that were selected to be featured in the series アジア本格リーグ, but most of them are not available anymore TT. And I’m talking original language (when I can read it of course, so English, Chinese and Korean) and the Japanese translation.
The アジア本格リーグ is a series of 6 honkaku mystery novels from Asia selected by 島田荘司 and translated into Japanese from 2009 to 2010.
Except from the first book of the series, 錯置體 by 藍霄 (TW), that I am currently reading, and 乱神馆记系列之蝶梦 by 水天一色 (MC), all the others are - as far as I could tell - out of stock, are not reprinted anymore despite being translated - and, I would expect, be a somewhat representative book of the genre in their respective countries - and worse didn’t get any ebook version.
I thought this series would be a good opportunity to read honkaku mysteries from different countries, either in their original language or in Japanese translation, but apparently it’s not happening… Thankfully 錯置體 got a new edition in 2024 and is available digitally. The other available one, 乱神馆记系列之蝶梦 by 水天一色, got a new edition in 2023, but I couldn’t find the digital version.
Traditional characters are not a big problem to me, even though I do read more slowly in Traditional, but sometimes, there are characters that still puzzle me like 蒐 = 搜. I guess because it doesn’t look like a Traditional vs Simplified character at all.
Plan for today is to start my new Japanese book, and go through all the floor plan section in 錯肢體. When there’s a difficult part in a novel, I often put off going through it, and without realising it weeks have passed and I don’t feel like opening the book anymore because I’m not in the story anymore. So today, I’ll read those pages!
I continued Emilie SQ, there was a big chunk where I couldn’t pause, so this means I have a lot of text to study now before continuing. Still enjoying the story very much!
I spent some time exploring 虚海望. I am extremely late in exploration, so I’m slowly catching up now. I finished the WQ 以罪行惩戒罪人. I loved this one, very few dialogues, good puzzles and combats. I also opened a lot of chests in the region, my exploration progress was 31 when I started, and it’s now 42. I also started 魔女的小屋, finally!
I actually kind of like being so behind in exploration, because it means I still have a lot to do in the game, even during dry patches.
I started chapter 2, and the story is really taking an expecting turn, it’s so intriguing! The book is starting to become a page-turner, BUT, I reached a point with maps/floor plans, and it looks very detailed. At the same time, it’s the first time I’m reading detailed descriptions of buildings and floor plans in Chinese, and it’s very difficult, even with the drawings. I don’t have the courage to tackle it right now, it’s going to be a touch passage.

I like having a double rating for books: a five star rating and a favourite checkbox. The star rating is for how good I think the book was, and the favourite checkbox is obviously whether I loved it or not. There are books I absolutely loved even though they had flaws or books I think were great but that I didn’t like as much. So the star rating would be closer to what I would recommend or not to others, whereas the favourite mark is more personal.
I made some progress on the book yesterday. I think it’s a good novel, but I’m not loving it as much as I wanted to. I think I don’t like it very much when point of view changes when convenient, and episodes of the past are just revealed to the reader at some point. I hope I can read a little bit more today, but in any case, I should be able to finish it this week.

I’m just connecting that the 瑕 in 完美无瑕 is the same as in 瑕疵. Makes it much easier to remember! 完美无瑕 (perfect, flawless) is in one of Mizuki’s voicelines, and I had to look up more precisely what 瑕 means, because I thought I didn’t know this character. Then I realised I actually knew it from 瑕疵!
I found my next Japanese novel!
I’ve been browsing Japanese mystery books, and I saw this title: ネタバレあり~双紋島の殺人~ by 下村 敦史, and it sounds so intriguing! I never read this author before, but they’ve written a lot of books. ネタバレあり seems to be the most recent one. I don’t know if it’s the best one to start exploring the author’s bibliography, but I find the concept really interesting (apparently, the novel opens with spoilers for the story), so it will probably be my next Japanese read.
Now that I finished the first volume of ZOO, I don’t know if I should continue with the second volume straight away, or read something else in between.
I found all 5 short stories in the first volume of the collection to be fascinating and unique. I read a lot of mysteries and similar sub-genres, so it’s rare to find a story that feels new or features something I never read before. Seven Rooms, So Far and Zoo all falls in this category, and the other two were also excellent, so it’s really an amazing collection. All short stories also have very impactful endings.
I’m also really surprised by the language level of the whole collection: it is very easy to read. Definitely something to recommend to language learners though it contains topic like child abuse, and some stories felt really depressing, so it might not be everyone’s cup of tea.
I finished the last short story, the one that gives its name to the collection, Zoo. It was such a unique idea, I loved it very much. It was fascinating and strange, and at the same time disturbingly relatable? Obviously, not in the same context, but lying to oneself is really a commun thing we’re all doing, it’s just pushed to extremes in this short story.
Corvus voiceline
I’m working on Corvus voicelines. I didn’t pull on her banner, but I got her P1 thanks to the 100 free pulls from the mid-year anniversary. I never really paid attention to her voicelines though, but I’m working on it now!
I still haven’t finished a single book in May… but maybe I can finish ZOO 1 today, I only have one short story left. I think that finishing a book will boost my motivation to read more. I started the month with a DNF, and I’ve been reading 얼굴들 for more than a month now…
I’m just realising now that I’ve already read 4 short stories of Zoo 1, and only the first one had character names. And even those were in katakana, so I didn’t really need to do a character list.
I finished the fourth short story 陽だまりの詩, a story of love and death. My least favourite so far, maybe because of the SF elements, though again, the end was excellent.
I finished the second part! I’m not reading this book as regularly as I should so every time I come back to it, I have to make an effort to remember what happened…
I finished chapter 1! All along I was wondering how this novel would turn into a honkaku mystery (as it was stated in one of the prefaces), because the beginning didn’t feel like one at all, but now I can see how it could end up being honkaku after all. It’s very intriguing in any case.
I found a word I learnt in the lyrics of a song! 滂沱 pāngtuó (to describe rain as pouring, flooding, torrential). I’m so glad when it happens, makes everything feel worth it. It’s typically the kind of word I would not have looked up, because not knowing it doesn’t not affect the comprehension of the sentence 我永遠不會忘記,大雨滂沱的夜裡 (…). It’s obvious it describes the rain, and because we already have 大雨, it’s also obvious that it describes a rain pouring down.
So it’s the kind of word I won’t look up when I see it in a novel, but because I’m studying song lyrics (meaning, actually looking up every word I don’t know, and look for metaphors or hidden references), I already had this word in my flashcards.
Small victory!!

脑袋里有了新的点子之后,就一直想实现它,否则的话就睡不着觉,连甜点也觉得不好吃了,对吗?
I finished the event story and the associated anecdotes. I loved it very much, and I really really love Aino! The additional anecdotes were very good too (I much prefer this format over the drink event we had last time).
I started the second short story: 山羊座的友人. I found the beginning very hard, I had to listen to it several times and even open the book to check out the names, because I could not remember them well as I didn’t know how they were written. After several attempts and giving up a few times before starting again, I think I’m now following much more easily. Still a challenging listen!
The difference in reading speed in all three languages is huge. I read the fastest in Japanese, then Simplified Chinese. Then I think there’s a huge gap, then Traditional Chinese, then the slowest is still Korean I think. And it’s not just the reading pace, but how fast I’ll get tired and will need a break.
Of course it also depends on the difficulty of the book.
I was hoping to finish the first chapter today, but reading in Traditional Chinese is quite tiring (even though the novel is not particularly difficult to read), so I’ll stop here for today.
One thing I noticed is that the ebook uses two different fonts (it happens often to differentiate between normal narration and a letter for example), and only one of these is customisable. That’s why I suddenly couldn’t change the font anymore. It’s unfortunate, as I’m afraid the font I can’t change will be the main one for the remaining of the book, and I really don’t like it.
Books I read in 2 days.
I just realised that since I record my readings, there are three books I read in two days, and it’s one in each language!!
-
Chinese (Taiwan): 好好再見 不負遇見 by 黃山料. This one was a very short novel, with a lot of margins on each page. Not my favourite genre, but it read very easily, and I liked the characters and couldn’t stop reading about their story.
-
Japanese: 8番出口 by 川村元気. Another very short novel, very suspenseful and impossible to put down. I actually preferred the book over the film.
-
Korean: 무덤까지 비밀이야 by 안세화. I absolutely adored this novel, it got me out of a reading slump for Korean, I loved the story so so much!

I finally took the time to farm Linnea’s 空羽蛾 (empty wings moths?), so she’s finally built now. 90, 1/9/9. I’m sorry it took so long, but I really haven’t played a lot during this patch…
Also, she’s dealing up to 300.000 with a fully charged Lumi… what???
Aaahh, I finally added all my finished books list to my new DB… It was such an annoying task to do, no way to import automatically, so I had to fill all the fields manually. So now the Stats page has access to all the books I read since Summer 2025, that is the time when I started the project to always be reading one book in each of my target languages.
First I had this idea to leave no gap, so as soon as I finished a book, I would “start” a new one. This only meant select it as my next read in this language, not actually starting reading it, but I still used the select date as starting date. I’m not doing this anymore, it’s fine if I stay one or two weeks without reading anything in a given language.
Pfff, I’m so tired of adding all these books. I feel the satisfaction of having completed a task that needed to be done, and at the same time, the frustration of having wasted my time. Well at least it’s done.
(I saw so many started and finished dates and so many published date and number of pages… I wouldn’t be surprised if there are books that ended up with the data meant for other books… Oh well…)
I’m not completely out of my reading slump, but at least the three books I’m currently reading are all great. Zoo 1 especially, because the stories are short and easy to read, so I tend to pick this one whenever I feel like reading - or rather, when I feel I should make some progress on my books.
錯置體 looks to be very great too, but I’m still at the beginning, and I feel it’s going to take some more pages for me to really get into the story. And 얼굴들 is the most difficult to read, not because it’s particularly difficult, but simply because it’s in Korean.
Genshin Luna VII SP
On the one hand, the AQ looks really great and I’m looking forward to playing it, on the other hand, I hate how long the AQ has been this version, and I’m kind of stressed out just thinking that the next one might again be a 7 hour long story. They did say players will now know when they can stop the story without losing progress, but knowing it won’t be useful if we effectively can’t get out of the story like it was the case for previous chapters. If I’m forced to play a 4 hour chunk in one sitting, knowing there’s a save point just after taking back control of the characters won’t be that useful. I really really hope they added more spots where we can actually leave the story. I don’t care about breaking immersion, I just want to enjoy the story at my own pace and not burn out.
The biggest surprise of the whole SP to me is Nicole’s burst animation. It’s so beautiful!! Nicole was my least favourite design from all the version cast, but because she can be a potential teammate for Xiao paired with Durin… I had decided to pull her in spite of her design. But now my opinion is completely changing, her animations are sublime, I’m really starting loving her now and I’m looking forward to playing her. And given that I am really behind in my exploration progress, her special ability will be very useful too.

The 速摄快镜 event is so weird. I thought each stage would bring more freedom of expression but we’re back to just walking in line today? And the result is not even what we shot, I tried turning around and walk in zigzag, but the final film didn’t show any of that. So it feels like what we do doesn’t even matter, it’s just pick a character and then watch a pre-made animation of them walking in line… what?!
So I thought I’d go watch some films from my friend list (which turned out to be equally boring). First video I saw was the NA one, and it was Zibai wielding Prototype Rancour?
Edit: Oh, I think Prototype Rancour was on trial Zibai! They really didn’t even try to make this event feel real hahahaha!
I finished the third short story, So-far そ・ふぁー, and it was so depressing and so good at the same time. Such a unique idea, I found it really fantastic, but it was quite sad… Similarly to the first two stories the end was really really great.
Now I’m wondering if all the short stories of the collection are going to be so powerful, this would be crazy. I’m also not sure if it’s going to be a common theme for the whole collection, but so far protagonists have all been children or teenagers.
Read a little bit today, the plot becomes more and more interesting.
I have a weird bug on Readmoo where I can’t change the font anymore, and the one by default is a pain to read (lines are too thin so the characters do not show well imo).
I finished chapter 3 of the story, and it was so great! Even though I found the story very predictable, and even though what happened was what I expected, it was still very good. I loved the main NPC’s story.
To be honest, I haven’t been a big fan of the last two events stories (the Mondstadt one and the Dragon Spine event), so I’m really glad about this one.

I’m progressing very slowly, but I did study one more short passage. It was pretty easy, almost no new word apart from 嗅觉. I was surprised I never saw this word before! I do think I have a solid vocabulary basis now, but then sometimes I come across basic words that I didn’t know at all, and it always feels weird.
殺死瑪麗蘇
I’m continuing this trend to listen to Chinese translations of Japanese authors. I’m currently reading a book by Otsuichi, but in Japanese, so it’s funny to listen to other of his works in translation.
This collection was released to celebrate 20 years anniversary of Otsuichi’s writing career. It contains 7 stories written under several of his pen names.
Unfortunately, I can’t find the name of the narrator. I looked everywhere, it’s extremely frustrating, especially given how good the narration is.
黎明之街
For my second audiobook in Mandarin, I chose a translation of an author I know is easy to read: Keigo Higashino. I haven’t read 夜明けの街で, and it’s probably not a book I would have wanted to read anyway. The full cast of narrator was absolutely excellent, and the audiobook was really good. The story though… it was okay, but also not very engaging. I think it might be my least favourite Higashino so far.
怪屋谜案
My first audiobook in Mandarin! I chose 変な家 because I already read it in Japanese, and it was very easy to read, so I was hoping that the Chinese audiobook would be easy too, and it was!! This audiobook was very easy to understand and the quality of the narration is top notch. Unfortunately though, I can’t find the name of the narrators (it’s a full cast). I already spent hours looking for the information so I give up for now, but yeah, it’s a shame…
I know I haven’t played a lot of Genshin lately, still haven’t explored Dornman Port nor did the World Quest, and it’s true that I haven’t gone very far in the last Nod-Krai expansion… but running out of encounter points still feels like shock TT
I didn’t read as much as I wanted, but the beginning is very engaging! And we have author self-insertion, I like it!
孟婆汤 by Chris Yu
Completely unrelated to the book, but because the name of the first chapter is 孟婆汤, and I didn’t know this word so I looked it up, I came across the song by Taiwanese singer Chris Yu called 孟婆汤. I believe it’s from 1999.
喝下這碗解藥
忘了所有的好
所有的寂寥
Here 孟婆汤 is seen as a blessing to forget everything after a heartbreak.
(Oh and by the way, I’m not super familiar with Mandapop, I do listen to a lot of music on YouTube, but I do lack the basis. I never heart of Chris Yu before…)

Finally starting 錯置體!
I finished Seven Rooms, and wow, this short story was so intense! Very suspenseful and almost suffocating, difficult to put down. I think that good horror stories are not necessarily scary, but they have that moment when the reader realises something (either before, after or at the same time than the characters) that sends a cold shiver running down your spine. It’s not just about fear, but the realisation of what is truly happening, or that something horrible is going to happen. This short story gave me exactly that feeling.
Liangyue’s team is complete! I love Cheng Heguang’s I2! I also loved his role in the story, but I mainly pulled because he is a dedicated support for Liangyue.
I looked at Cheng Heguang’s kit, on the one hand, it is much simpler than Liangyue’s, but on the other hand, it’s still very difficult to understand to me… Like, even in English, it’s not because I read a kit once that I know how to play the character, but it’s worse in Chinese. It’s not even a vocab problem, because I already knew most of the words in his kit, it’s just that I read everything and have no idea of what he does appart from buffing and dealing some damage? Maybe I’m just stupid ^^’
Someone borrowed one of my characters! It could be Getian P3, Charon P3, or Ezio P5. Maybe I should replace Getian with Liangyue P3, she has her euphoria, her skin and her Resonance is maxed too. With the release of Cheng Heguang, people might want to try her before deciding whether to pull on the true-limited rerun banner.
Cheng Heguang!
Cheng Heguang came home at soft pity! Now I need to read and study his kit in Chinese, build him (3/60/10 for now I think), and learn how to play him with Liangyue. Which reminds me that I still haven’t entirely studied Liangyue’s euphoria (her kit is such a pain to read TT). As for the voicelines, I’ll study them when the audio is available on the wiki, I don’t know exactly when they’re uploaded, but it might take two patches still.
I finished Getian’s anecdote, I loved it, though it left me melancholic. I understand now why he has his anecdote this patch, the story beautifully echoes the themes of the event story, but from a completely different perspective.
I’m not a fan of the new anecdote format though… it’s just reading, I Iiked the older one much more.
I opened Where Winds Meet for the first time in ages. I didn’t know what to do so I started chapter 2 of the main story, looks lime I’ll finally go to Kaifeng.
Chinese is so so so hard in this game. I’m proud of my progress, but every time I play WWM I feel like I never left the beginner level. As usual, so many menus and notifications I only half understand, I love how lively the world is and all the NPCs talking in the street, but I understand nothing of what they say. As for the main story, it’s okayish because a lot happens on screen, so even without understanding much of the dialogues, you can kind of follow. But it’s so overwhelming… I need a break.
Oh and I thought my guild would definitely have kicked me out, but I’m still there <3
I finished the first short story, カザリとヨーコ. I wasn’t expecting something so depressing to start the collection, but it was very good, and I loved the end very much. Very easy to read too. In the end, the character of the mother was an interesting one, but it’s not the focus of the story. I wish we knew more about her, and there are still some questions left unanswered.
My top 7 Xiao is now top 8! Someone, somewhere, has upgraded their Xiao’s artifacts ^^.
(I still have some dust left…)
I don’t pull all the true limited characters, but Paper Heron was a must pull! I never played the Star Impromptu team, so Impromptu is a new mechanic to me!
ママがわたしを殺すとしたらどのような方法で殺すだろうか。

I’m starting ZOO1!
Listening to 杀死玛丽苏
I listened to the first short story: 可爱的猿猴日记 by 乙一, and I was able to follow quite well! I don’t know why it felt so difficult the first time, maybe I was just not focused enough. Alright, so 杀死玛丽苏 is officially my current audiobook!
Linnea’s kit was not difficult to read at all. I learnt how to say “hit” (it’s for Lumi hitting with her hammer) and “million tones” lol.
One of the many audiobooks I started and gave up because it was too difficult is: 杀死玛丽苏, the Chinese translation of メアリー・スーを殺して by Otsuichi and other authors. My idea was to find this book in Japanese and read as my next Jp book, but I couldn’t find a digital version, and I don’t want to buy physical books if possible. So I gave up on the idea (but did by another Otsuichi book instead!). But I think I should try again with the audiobook. I could go slowly and repeat passages that I didn’t understand. I can also consult the book, because it’s available on Weixin Dushu alongside the audiobook. I’ll start again at the beginning.

I chose my next book in Japanese: ZOO1 by 乙一. I have never read this author before, so it’s a first!
I’m going to DNF ゲームの世界に転生した俺が○○になるまで 1. Unfortunately, I’ve been in a reading slump/busy period, and I haven’t touched this book for maybe two weeks now. I think it’s a great book, but I didn’t vibe with the protagonist at all. Generally speaking, I can’t feel any attachment to any of the characters, but for カリヤ, I just don’t really like his general attitude.. I don’t know, it’s just a personal feeling. I like the world and it was very fun to read about the parallels between the world and the game, but it’s not enough to keep me in the book. If I hadn’t been in a reading slump lately, I probably would have pushed myself to finish it, but first, after a long break I really don’t feel like going back to it, and second, I’m pretty sure I won’t continue the series, so going through all the world building in the first volume to then stop feels a bit of a waste.
I finished the main story! It was difficult to follow in Chinese, especially all the taoist/spiritual things, I can’t say I understood everything. Overall, I’d say I understood maybe 75% of what was said? Whereas a typical Genshin story would be closer to 95%? I liked the story overall, but it’s not my favourite, I much preferred last year’s Chinese New Year’s story with Liangyue.
I understood almost everything that Reed said, and Huigu was also rather easy. Cheng Heguang and Li shoubei were okayish, though there was a lot of vocabulary related to official duties, rank, etc. And Cheng Heguang uses a lot of chengyu. Lusi Jian and Ren Xianren were by far the most difficult to understand. Lusi Jian uses a lot of classical expressions, her Chinese was the most challenging. And Ren Xianren was mostly talking about taoist stuff that I would have found difficult to entirely grasp in English too anyway.
I’m looking forward to Cheng Heguang’s banner! I’ll pull a copy for Liangyue, and then save to P5 Charon.
A prosecutor sees ghosts and is introduced to a mysterious law firm that opens at night ran by a lawyer who tries to bring justice to these lingering souls. The idea is that people who have been killed cannot find peace in the afterworld as long as their killer has not been prosecuted.
This adds a new layer to the case, because seeing a victim linger in our world when their case is solved, means it’s probably a wrongful conviction. I liked both the plot and the way supernatural elements were integrated into it.
At the same time, I don’t know what’s happening with Japanese novels, but since the beginning of the year, I’ve had a hard time feeling involved in the novels I’ve read in Japanese. I think the problem comes from me rather than the book, but I found that it lacked something to make it an exciting read. There’s no real investigation, and I felt disconnected from the case and the characters involved, it felt like someone was telling me the story, instead of me living the story through the novel?
Given the plot and the topics (I love legal thrillers, crime investigations and wrongful convictions is one of my favourite topics too), I should have loved this novel, but I didn’t… So I think it’s time for me to take a break in mystery novels in Japanese and try other genres.
When I read collections of short stories, I never expect to love every single story, but I did with this book! They were all very diverse in topic, but every time I felt immediately drawn into the story and involved in the character’s fate.
I’m amazed at how diverse the stories are, we have a character spying on phone communications in the military, a woman paying an actor to act as her father during a pre-marriage meeting with the other party, a zombie outbreak, an unscrupulous private detective, and even a legal battle to prove legitimate defence in a murder case.
As much as I loved each story, I did find that the end was often a bit underwhelming. The story often found a smooth resolution rather than having a more striking ending that would leave a strong impression or be more dramatic? Maybe that’s just my personal taste, I still think the collection is excellent and it belongs to my favourite books this month.
I loved the first volume of this series, FIX, so much, that I really didn’t think a second volume could be as good, but it was! The second volume is similar to the first one: we follow writers as they struggle with their writings, sometimes forcing a plot on their characters which had the consequence to turn an innocent into the culprit.
In the first volume, they were helped by a mysterious A-kui, but in this one, they are helped by someone else (often a friend). I personally found this even more interesting than A-kui’s contributions in the first volume, because it gave a whole new dimension to the stories. In the first volume, we were following the fiction written by the authors (which was always a good mystery in itself!), and how the author would fix their writing and find the right path (which sometimes involved finding the real culprit in their own work). But now, the relationship between the author and the other person helping them is also a topic in itself, and I really loved seeing how working on a fiction often made them closer.
The types of fiction present in the collection were also very diverse, from manga to video games, with each their own challenges.
I really wish both FIX and FIX2 were translated into English, they’re both unique collections!
I didn’t like this book as much as 403小組,警隊出動!or 七十號,你的鳥歪了, but I still enjoyed reading it a lot.
403小組,警隊出動!was depicting daily work at a busy police station with quotas to meet and a lot of pressure on low rank officers who had to work insane shifts. In 那年,東眼山,斜角派出所, it’s the complete reverse. We’re in a quiet place where nothing really happens in terms of crime, but social unrest is growing as anti-governmental protest is getting more and more virulent, especially among students.
那年,東眼山,斜角派出所 is a coming of age novel, it has a little bit of romance, and exposes police misconduct while also giving an engaging plot.
The only thing that I would maybe criticise a bit, is that the plot and the way the relation evolves between the two protagonists (a young policeman who just does his job and doesn’t understand politics all that much, and a student involved in the protest with a lot of political awareness and strong views on everything) is not really new and very foreseeable.
I still loved it, I really love Yen Yu’s writing style, and I like how the three police novels I read so far all have very different settings and plots.
Part of me wants to do Getian’s Anecdote in Chinese, and part of me just doesn’t have the courage. Because Getian is one of my favourite characters, I want to understand what I read, and his lore might be a bit difficult in Chinese too. I’ll probably stick to English.
One thing that I’m really happy about, is that I checked his anecdote weapon, and I can read the passive in Chinese without much struggle now! I’ve been studying character kits, and it pays off. I used to always check characters kits in English (even for Genshin), because it felt impossible to read abilities in Chinese, but I’m working on this now, and it’s not as daunting as I thought.
His weapon: 若记忆者灵感为【兽】,布设【术阵】时,为术阵附加额外效果:已方全体仪式威力提升10%,术阵结束后或被顶替后移除额外效果.
Which I understand as “If the (bearer?)’s afflatus is Beast, when they deploy an array, add an additional effect to the array: ceremonial might (I think it’s ultimate might, but I’ll have to check) increased by 10% for all team members, this additional effect stops when the array ends or is replaced.”
The only thing is 记忆者, which I assume refers to the person holding the weapon. I didn’t know they were called “the one who remembers”, but given that weapons are 心相, it makes sense.
I was afraid that Emilie Story Quest would be full of words related to perfume and flowers (not really the kind of vocabulary that I’m the most interested in), but the beginning has brought me surprisingly useful words that I didn’t know like 囤积居奇. I did add a lot of words just for the second dialogue, but I’ve seen most of them in my flashcards now, so I’ll continue the story as soon as I have time.
It’s crazy to think that I’m reviewing more than 200 flashcards per day with my new flashcard system and it doesn’t feel like a chore at all. I would have been desperate if I had to review 200 cards in Anki. I’m pretty sure it comes from mainly two reasons:
- I have sentences containing the word AND cards for single character associated with each flashcard, and I can click on the sentence to bring me back to the original text, be it a story for Genshin, a character’s voiceline or song lyrics.
- It’s much easier to re-read and re-listen to the text I studied with my new setup, so I constantly see the words I’m learning. With Anki, I mostly saw the words in the flashcards and that was it, I never went back to the original story I first saw them in. Being able to easily re-read the content I studied makes the words stick, so going through flashcards is easier.
I haven’t read that much today, but I’m back into the story now!
I’ve been confused by some dialogues in dialect: 죽애블라고 turns out to be 죽여버리려고. Though the context made it obvious and I knew it probably meant something threatening, I was still confused by the word.
I finished chapter 2 of the current event. I like the story (always here for crime fiction!!), but it’s very foreseeable…
Stats page is live! Still needs some improvement, and I’ve only added the books of 2026, but it’s taking shape!
I pulled Linnea mostly for her exploration abilities, her love for animals and her special interactions. I do have Zibai, but I would have pulled for Linnea even if she had another kit. Though I must say, I don’t like Lumi, I don’t like her design, and for some reason, I really dislike her unique voiceline.
Back to the novel! It’s always hard to go back to a book after a long break (even a book I love)… I’m almost halfway through and I just read 사건은 이제 시작됐다. It feels as if going back to the novel now was the right time!
I’m adding all the books I had listed on Google Sheets to the new DB… Not the most exciting task, but I still want to keep track of all the books I read since I started the language competition thing (always be reading a book in each of my target languages). I’ll probably add them little by little and start building stats pages when I have enough to display data.
I don’t know why, but I started Emilie SQ. I’m going to study it too. I don’t have Emilie and I know nothing about her, but I love her CN voice. I only played through the beginning, but I added all the unknown words to my flashcards (there were a ton of them!). I also just did day 1 of the current event, so I’ll need to progress on that too. Still can’t study the event because the text is not in the wiki yet.
Alright, I chose a book in Chinese, I opted for the Readmoo challenge one. I’m already four books into the challenge, so this next one will give me my first badge! It’s called 錯置體, written by 藍霄.
I looked at the wuxia section on Readmoo, there are so many books… Really difficult to know where to start, and most of them are series too. (Not that I want to read a non Gu Long wuxia novel, but I was curious and browsed the titles).
I listened to the first short story: 可爱的猿猴日记 by 乙一, and it was very easy to follow. The first time I tried this audiobook, it felt very hard, so maybe I was just not focused enough. The tone of this one is so different from the first two short stories of Zoo 1 I’m currently reading!
I still haven’t picked my next book in Chinese… Normally, I’m supposed to pick a new one as soon as I finish the last one, but I’ve been so busy lately, I still haven’t taken the time to choose one. There are so many things I want to read too… Some of the things I could choose are:
- Another Gu Long novel (I kind of want to read another Wuxia novel, but they’re all so long, I’m not sure now is the right time to start one)
- Continuing the 暗黑者 series by Zhou Haohui, but same problem: the second volume is super long, not the best for now.
- Picking a book from the Readmoo challenge (might be the best choice)
- Read another book by Yen Yu because I do want to read all his police novels (but I just finished one, so maybe reading something else first would be better?)
- Trying out a book by Doctor Qin (法医秦明), I’m pretty sure I will love them, but it’s going to be full of medical terms and I don’t have the courage to tackle something difficult right now.
- Read something that’s not crime fiction at all (I actually have a novel in mind…)
I will have to decide soon, I want to start the new book tomorrow!
Since I finished listening to 黎明之街 by Keigo Higashino in the Chinese translation, I haven’t found another audiobook that has a story that draws me in and is easy enough to understand so that I can follow the story even though, most of the time, I’m doing something else while listening to an audiobook.
I tried some full voiced romances because they seemed easy, but I often have a hard time feeling involved in the story. There’s one that I come back to from time to time because it’s easy to follow: 劣质关系 written by 柳妻 and voiced by 梵叶,澈柠,漠然烟若,萧熠然 as main cast.
Otherwise, I will maybe try another Keigo Higashino. I think that overall, Higashino is still one of my favourite Japanese authors, but I’m reading him less and less (last two books were kind of disappointments too…), so listening to books I still haven’t read in their Chinese translation and voiced by a full cast of great VAs, why not?
I think it’s been almost a week since I last opened a book TT. I hate it when it happens while I’m reading a book that I love and enjoy… I’m at 48%, almost half way through, but I’ll have to go back a few pages to remember what happened. Hopefully I’ll have more time next week to read the second half.
First post on my new blog!!
