5 books read in May This was possible because two of them were very short and very easy to read: Zoo1 by Otsuichi and 매일 죽어야 하는 X by Chung Myung-seop.
Months when I read more than one Japanese novels have been extremely rare (I actually checked, and the last one was November last year…). Most of the Japanese novels I’ve read recently have been disappointment, and I needed an author that could get me out of that Japanese reading slump and renew my passion for Japanese literature, and Otsuichi is exactly what I needed.
On the contrary, the Taiwanese novel I’ve been reading had a very complex plot, and it took me almost the whole month to finish.
My favourite book by far was the first volume of ZOO by Otsuichi 乙一. I don’t understand how this book can have a rating of 4 stars on some platforms I’ve visited, to me this collection was perfect. The plot was always so inventive, you immediately feel attached to the characters, the stories are suspenseful and melancholic at the same time… I’m going to read other books by this author, but I might keep them for audiobook listening (see below).
As usual, my main source to study Chinese is Genshin and most vocabulary comes from content from the game. I studied parts of Emilie SQ, and only just started studying the event 礁与浪的相逢. I’ll continue working on this event next month, focusing on dialogues by Yelan, Chevreuse and Nefer as these were the most difficult.
I also added vocabulary found in birthday mails and some items. I’m also working on voicelines from Genshin and Reverse1999 characters. This is not something I was doing before (when using Anki), so I have a lot of content to catch up, but I’m focusing on Nod-Krai characters for now.
I haven’t watched a lot of movies or series this month, but seeing 군체 in theatres has been such a great experience. That was such a great zombie film! I have watched a lot of zombie film, and this one is definitely among my favourites (and this comes from someone who didn’t like Train to Busan).
I also started If Wishes Could Kill on Netflix, only watched the first episode, but I like it so far. Characters are very cliché, but acting is good, the plot looks great, it’s funny, and I want to know what will happen next. It’s not going to be one of my favourite series for sure, but it’s a nice watch.
殺死瑪麗蘇 by Otsuichi has accompanied me the whole month. I still haven’t finished it, but I’ve loved all the short stories I’ve listened to so far. The narration on this one is so so great, unfortunately, I have the most difficulties finding names of narrators on Chinese audiobooks. I’m very sad about that…
May has been a decisive month for me with the creation of this website and the private one, and me giving up on both Wordpress and Mastodon. I’ve been busy filling this website too, 1- to make sure the system suited me before completely moving on to it, and 2- so that it doesn’t feel empty when I link to it from notes.inhae.blog (which I still haven’t done, because I still want to improve the site a bit before directing people to it).
But yeah, May has definitely been a good month for me!
